With Layering with Genjutsu, it's a must that you have to use the higher ranked illusion first before the weaker one; otherwise, the layering won't work. Pretty much going along with that, when layering illusions, you're only able to use two genjutsu. To break out of it, the only sure way is to break out of the higher ranked technique; and by doing that, the chakra put into the stronger one will easily break the weaker technique. Though layering genjutsu in battle is an effective offensive in a battle, it may not always work all the way since the target has the opportunity to release himself from the first illusion before the second is layered on.
