Dosu's eyes widen as the terrain suddenly changes. However he is not surprised, he had come across various things in the ninja world under the rule of Orochimaru.*the pleasant scenery you thought you were in fades away to reveal a generic creepy forest; dead trees, cobwebs, crows, all that. A cloaked man with piercings steps out from behind a tree, his body just as cold and lifeless*
So you've returned to learn the illusionary arts? I hope you've prepared yourself mentally for this, it's nothing like what you've learned before. Before we begin i need you to tell me all you can about Genjutsu.
*he leans with his back against the tree and arms crossed as he awaits your reply*
The other triggers besides hand seals sound very interesting. My only question is if an illusion can be kept active and then continue to use other ninjutsu techniques and such?*your report earns a nod of approval from Pein*
Very good. Now we delve deeper. As you know, Genjutsu affects the chakra flow of an opponent's brain but how does one get to that point? In order to produce a successful illusion you want to mold your chakra a certain way. Similarly to how someone creates Doton chakra for earth elemental techniques, the chakra used for Genjutsu is focused at a certain wavelength which in turn causes the target's chakra flow to become unbalanced and its natural wavelength changed to induce the illusion you want. Typically handseals are used to help in molding your chakra but it can be done through a direct sensory experience such as light, sounds, and scents that vary among techniques. These are known as "triggers". Controlling someone's chakra flow is a difficult task so the caster of an illusion must be near the target for it to have any effect. That's why it is rare for Genjutsu to exceed mid range. Any questions so far?
This technique seems very interesting, I have a few questions before I continue to perform it. You mentioned this technique casting over an extensive area like an invisible field. Does that mean if I change the terrain all around me up to mid range, and place you inside of an illusion, then have someone who was in long range enter this "field" they would also be trapped inside the visual illusion? We talked about individually messing with one's chakra system to infuse the illusion, however this one is a constant field that is maintained? Also, you spoke about triggers before. What would be the triggers to techniques that don't specify hand seals. Do I simply infuse my chakra into their brain to trigger it?After an illusion takes effect, there's no need to maintain it. It's like a drug except the medium is your chakra and not your bloodstream. If that's all, let's move on to something more practical. As you might know already, i'm not instructing you alone.
He stands beside you and motions to 5 other men walking into view. They are somewhat different in appearance but bear the same Rinnegan.
Whenever you cast a genjutsu, one of them will be your target. My doujutsu can detect when the illusion is placed and how it appears through their eyes, so i'll know if anything is wrong. We'll start off with a basic genjutsu only affecting sight. It is cast over an extensive area, an invisible field, and anyone who enters is make to believe their surroundings appear different than they actually are. The change could be minor like a sign saying something else, or major like a forest appearing to be a desert. There are many possibilities but changing how the terrain looks is the limit. Give it a shot.
p.s. Avoid being too vague with your reply. I want to know exactly what's going on.
( Magen: Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu ) - Demonic Illusion: False Surroundings TechniqueYou must be registered for see images
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10 (+5 if you use it double)
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion over an area that allows him to manipulate the way an area looks to fool an opponent. He can only change the way the terrain looks, and not any other feature.
Ty for answering my questions Sensei. I now have another one if you don't mind. What happens if someone does nothing about the illusion, and the illusion is not life threatening. For example, would some techniques end on their own or be stuck on the last time-frame moment? I am not sure if this makes any sense. To answer your first question, yes. It differs from most genjutsu because it doesn't need to be cast on a particular target, anyone in the area will see the same illusion.
Also, illusion is maintained just by being nearby.
And not every technique has a trigger. Some are done just as you described.
That last question is important. The real terrain would fade out or warp into the illusion. Its never instant.
Hmm good but a little faulty. Making him see a pit below him would just look like he's standing in midair. I hope you can handle sets of two. For this jutsu, form a handseal and throw a paper bomb at your target as you cast one illusion on him. The illusion should hide the paper bomb in what appears to be a clone of yourself running at him. Techniques like this one demonstrate how one could combine an illusionary attack with a real one. Just remember its range is limited. There's your target.
*points to a Pein walking toward you, wielding a black blade*
( Genjutsu: Kasumi ) - Illusion Technique: Servant
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: 20
Description: The user does one handseal and throws a paper bomb at the enemy. The enemy, trapped in a genjutsu will see a clone of the user advancing upon him. As the paper bomb reaches the enemy, it explodes
Next, cast a genjutsu on your target who should see multiple clones of you emerge from the terrain. While a normal clone would disappear when attacked, the target would see the clones he'd attacked merely divide into more clones. This is an excellent diversionary technique because you can move among the clones and attack while making it appear your copies are attacking. You could even hide behind an obstruction and let your target waste energy attacking illusions. See if you can fool him.

( Kasumi Jūsha no Jutsu ) - Mist Servant Technique
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: This illusion creates numerous illusionary clones of the user that appear to emerge from the ground, trees, rocks, etc. If these clones are attacked, they appear to multiply. The user can co-ordinate his attacks with the clones to make it appear as if they are real.
Okay I understand ty!Answer: In the case of Hell Fire, you'd be surrounded by flames and stay that way. For the Mist technique, once the clone explodes and the petals fall away the illusion ends.
It mostly depends on the genjutsu used but there is no time limit to being in one. The Sly Mind Effect technique shows you can be in one for hours. Others have temporary effects like the second one you mentioned.
And with Servant, the clone hides your actions if you do it right.
Impressive, you're learning quickly. For the next technique form five handseals before casting an illusion on your target. To him, your body should appear to dissolve into many cherry blossom petals. That's not all. Those petals should surround the target, obstructing his vision as well. In reality you are free to move with your target unaware. Take him down with stealth.

( Genjutsu: Kahen Tonsou ) - Illusion Technique: Flower Petal EscapeYou must be registered for see images
Rank: D
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 10
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user makes five handseals, appearing to dissolve into a shower of cherry blossom petals. These petals surround the opponent, blocking his vision. This allows the user to mask his movement effectively.
Here we have a technique that uses your opponent's fears against them. Perform two handseals before casting an illusion on your target. He will see leaves begin to spin around him and eventually fall to the floor. A moment later, he should witness his greatest fear right in front of him. Such a sight should make the target falter or faint if the illusion is especially traumatic. Remember that its effectiveness varies from person to person. Without knowing the enemy's fears, the chances he reacts the way you want become slim. See that overweight guy? His should be easy to guess.

Description: The user performs two handseals causing it to appear as if a swirl of leaves surrounds the opponent. The swirl eventually falls away, and after a few seconds, the opponent sees the image of whatever they fear the most, shocking them and potentially causing them to faint.
Sensei, what is classified as "Low" & "High" ranking taijutsu? Are there any specifics via ranks or possibly severity of injury? Also, what would happen if I was placed inside of an illusion that restricts my body movements, it is S ranked and I have no access to a chakra surge strong enough? Also, physically unable to move does not mean I can't manipulate my chakra correct? If I wanted to perform a technique that didn't require gestures or hand seals, I would be open to do so? Unless the illusion of course didn't allow me to for example, being chocked and such.Answer: If you move while turning into petals your opponent will see you moving until you completely disappear.
It's hard to say. Weak willed people are more likely to faint but showing a very traumatic image to a strong person could have the same effect. The more believable the illusion, the better.
Not bad. Now that we've covered basic illusions you're going to learn how to break or release them. This is a crucial knowledge for any ninja so listen closely. As you know, genjutsu works by altering a person's chakra flow. To return his chakra flow to its normal state, another imbalance must occur to dispel current ones and allow his chakra to reset itself. Three basic methods exist to do just that:
Pain (lol): Possibly the easiest but most dangerous release method is producing pain. Like waking a person in slumber, it is meant to shock the body which alters his physical energy. This in turn creates a spike in his chakra, breaking the illusion. The level of pain needed to break an illusion increases with higher ranked illusions. Here's a basic guideline.
*hands you a scroll*
Some ninja like myself are more accustomed to or resistant to pain, so this method won't be as effective for us. Hence, we move on to the next method.- D Rank Genjutsu: Chipping a Finger (like one does as he bites to draw blood for a Summoning Jutsu)
- C Rank Genjutsu: Low level Physical Attacks, Bitting a chunk of your Cheek
- B Rank Genjutsu: Low ranked Taijutsu/Freestyle
- A Rank Genjutsu: High ranked Taijutsu, Stabbing Yourself in minor muscle, Cutting yourself, Breaking Smaller bones, Low level Burning/Voltage, Painful Cold
- S Rank Genjutsu: EIG/Sage level Taijutsu, Breaking Bones, Deep Stabs or cuts, Medium Voltage/Burning, Extreme Painful Cold, Bitting your tongue off
Foreign chakra/energy: Basically, having chakra transferred to you by an ally or taking in any foreign energy such as natural energy into your chakra flow will unbalance it and thus release you from genjutsu. The last method is most important.
Kai/Chakra Surge- This one is meant to alter your spiritual energy through sheer willpower. Two ways to do this is through the Kai technique or causing a high chakra surge in your chakra flow. To break illusions with a chakra surge you must release large amounts of chakra from your whole body using a suitable jutsu. It should be at least one rank higher than the illusion so the surge overcomes the illusion. Raw chakra techniques must be at least two ranks higher.
As for the Kai technique, i will teach it to you now. First, form a handseal and focus on your chakra flow. Through willpower alone bring your flow to a halt before suddenly starting it up again with a surge of chakra. This will disturb your spiritual energy and get rid of the illusion cast on you as long as the chakra spent is equal to the chakra used for the genjutsu. Not all genjutsu can be broken with this technique. They include paralysis type genjutsu and Mangekyo Sharingan techniques. Your skill also determines the level of genjutsu you can break, higher skill allowing you to break high level genjutsu. If you're ready, try and break this illusion. Jigoku Gouka!

Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 15
Damage Points:N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion where the opponent sees a huge ball of fire descending from the sky and enveloping its target.
( Genjutsu: Kai ) - Illusion Technique: Release
Rank: C-S
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 15-40
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user does one hand seal to focus and then proceeds to disturb his chakra flow by forcefully stopping it momentarily and then "spiking" his spiritual energy, unbalancing his chakra. This dispels any genjutsu set upon the user except MS Eye Techniques, Paralysis-like Genjutsu and Demonic Illusion: Toad Confrontation Chant. The effectiveness of this technique is dependent upon the skill of the user. A Jounin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to C-rank. An S-class ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to B-rank. A Sannin rank ninja can dispel Genjutsu up to A-rank. A Sage rank user can dispel Genjutsu up to S-Rank. The user may use this technique through physical contact on others to dispel them from Genjutsu. The technique can only be used once per turn and the user still needs to fully follow the logic as to why he figured out it was an illusion
*Pein observes Izaku's reaction to the illusion while answering his "burning" questions*
I would classify moves A rank and above as high ranked taijutsu. B rank and below would be low ranked. While you could go by the ranks, the pain caused the injury is most important. The same technique could have an entirely different effect if aimed for a vulnerable point of the body.
Now if you can't move due to genjutsu you are still free to use jutsu capable of inflicting pain on yourself without having to move. The exception are genjutsu that make you unconscious while in the illusion. I hope that clears things up for you.
*with his Rinnegan, Pein sees for himself your progress in dispelling the genjutsu and smiles when your chakra flow returns to normal after being reset*
Excellent. Remember combating genjutsu efficiently depends on the method you deem appropriate for the situation. The next genjutsu is more deceptive than others. It is cast on a moving target who is made to believe he is moving in a strait line but in reality travels in circles. This is accomplished by shifting the image of the victim's destination without them realizing it has moved, making them follow it back to where they started. If the victim travels in circles for hours, they'll become exhausted. Try it out.
*points to a Pein who sees a ramen shop in the distance and runs toward it*
( Kori Shinchū no Jutsu ) - Sly Mind Affect Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points: N/A
Description: The user casts an illusion on the opponent that makes them believe they are travelling in a straight line, when instead they are moving in circles. This is only effective on moving opponents. If the opponent travels in the circle for hours, they will be exhausted.
Now i'll teach you a technique used for interrogation. You will place your hand on a stationary target and disrupt their chakra flow. Use your control over their senses to mentally weaken the target and convince them to give away information, similar to a truth serum. It will only work on a target at least two ranks beneath you. Here's you victim.
*throws a random Ame ninja before you. He's tied up so he can't move*
OOC: It's up to you what he says, idc :3
( Genjutsu: Jinmon ) - Illusion Technique: Interrogation
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short
Chakra Cost:15
Damage Points:30
Description: The user of this technique, upon casting on a stationary opponent with physical contact with them, is able to convince the enemy to give away information. However, this will only work on ninja two ranks lower and below than the caster.
Apologizes for the delay, I won't bother you with my excuses Sensei. ;sweat;*both genjutsu fail. Pein is still going strait and the random villager is just scared*
Pathetic. I'll grant you another chance. Remember what i said earlier. To get someone to move in circles you need to have them follow a target that has moved without them realizing it. Regarding the second technique, if you want information out of someone, traumatizing them won't help, at least not in this case. That genjutsu works like a drug affecting the target, making them say things they normally wouldn't such as important secrets.
OCC: It was shown in the anime to affect multiple people but judging from the description, it appears that only a single target can be influenced.Much better. Now i want you to cast an illusion on your enemy, making him see a massive fireball descending from the sky that engulfs them in fire. This particular illusion is easily mistaken for a fire jutsu because the victim feels heat from the flames as well as everything else. Give these guys something to worry about.

Moving on, this is another genjutsu involving illusionary clones. In this illusion you would create a clone that will run at the enemy, jump, and explode into many sakura petals. This serves to obscure the enemy's vision and allow you to attack while he is distracted. Try following up the technique with an attack of your choice. There's your target.
*points to a Pein approaching with a blade*
( Genjutsu: Kasumi no Jutsu ) - Illusion Technique: Mist Technique
Rank: C
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra cost: 15
Damage points: N/A
Description: The user creates an illusionary clone that charges towards the enemy, jumps, then explodes in a cloud of cherry blossom petals which results in confusing the opponent and obscuring their vision, leaving them open for attack.
It's time i introduced genjutsu layering, the overlap of one genjutsu with another on the same target. Basically, two genjutsu that do not conflict with each other may be layered in order to merge their effects or stack them. The most important rule to remember is that when layering genjutsu, the second genjutsu must be of equal rank or lower than that of the first one, else the lower ranked genjutsu will be overpowered and broken.
To release yourself from layered genjutsu you could release each one individually or both at the same time if the release method is strong enough to break the highest ranked genjutsu involved.
You're learning this now so you can fully understand the next technique that follow the same concept. Take this, it's description is very detailed already. Use it on me.
*tosses you a scroll detailing the technique*
(Magen: Nijū Kokoni Arazu no Jutsu) Demonic Illusion: Double False Surroundings TechniqueYou must be registered for see images
Type: Supplmentary
Rank: B-Rank
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra: 20
Damage: N/A
Description:
The user will do a sequence of 3 handseals, putting his opponents under a double layered Genjutsu. The user is able to create false surroundings to fool his targets, much like the simpler version of the technique. However, the illusion is in fact layered. If the opponent manages to release the first one, he will then feel the effects of the second illusion. If, for example, the first illusion is that of a desert and the second that of a forest, upon releasing the first one, the opponent will see the desert fade away while the forest appears around him, making him think he dispelled the illusion while in essence he is still caught in one. Each illusion is equivalent to C-Rank and both are casted at the same time. While normal releases will release only one illusion at a time, a strong enough pain or an external source of chakra can dispel both at the same time.
Well, this technique is basically a technique that allows you to create distractions, which are the multiple hands waving; once the enemy is distracted, you are able to strike him/her down with the original sword... It's really quite simple, the waving hands makes it pretty hard to focus on the actual blade, so yeah.( Konoha-Ryū: Yanagi ) - Leaf Ninja Art: Willow
Rank: B
Type: Offensive
Range: Short
Chakra Cost: 20
Damage points: 35
Description: The user waves their sword back and forth, which when seen by the target locks them in a genjutsu which causes them to hallucinate multiple waving arms. The movement resembles that of a willow tree blowing in the wind. With the enemy off guard, the user is free to cut them down.
This next technique requires the usage of four hand seals. Perform the hand seals and send chakra to a targets' chakra system in order to disrupt it. The illusion begins with the user suddenly and spontaneously disappearing and simultaneously, an imaginary vine whip grows from the ground and beneath the target. The vines bind the targets' body and lifts them up in the air, and a pod appears from the ground near the lifted target in which the user will appear to strike - acting as a really great distraction for you to attack with the actual attack.( Genjutsu: Ingemame Ketsugō Sakkaku ) - Illusion Technique String Bean Binding Illusion
Rank: B
Type: Supplementary
Range: Short-Mid
Chakra Cost: 20
Damage points: N/A
Description: Similar to Illusion Technique: Tree Binding Death, the user will do the Dog → Hare → Snake → Ram hand seals and trigger an illusion where the user first disappears, while the target sees several bean vines growing from the ground around and beneath him. These vines bind the target body, lifting them into the air. Then a bean pod rises from the ground to reveal the user, ready to strike. In reality, the opponent is immobilized by the illusion, allowing the user to strike.
This one requires you to insert your chakra into the opponent's chakra system and disrupting it in order to induce an illusion. The illusion will make it seem like the target is atop a flower bud; the area around them will turn pitch black making it appear as if they've been summoned into an alternate reality. It is as shown below in the illustration; and shortly after, the flower of the illusion explodes, making the target believe that they have sustained injuries from the illusion. The damage of this technique is a result of mental stress.( Magen: Hanarasui ) - Demonic Illusion: Flower Head Death
Rank: B
Type: Offensive/Supplementary
Range: Short- Mid
Chakra Cost: 20
Damage points: 40 due to stress on the mind
Description: The user will trap the target within an illusion where the opponent appears to be trapped in a large flower bud which then explodes. The opponent is made to believe that an explosion actually occurred and collapses, believing himself to be injured. The resulting stress on his mind causes damage.
