So its fairly obvious that League of Legends is the largest PC game in the world. At least according to their numbers (which years of observing current pc market trends etc leads me to be skeptical of), they have more CONCURRENT players on League of Legends, than steam's most popular game (Dota 2) has players TOTAL.
I'm going to explain objectively why not only is Dota 2 the CLEARLY better game, but WHY league has more players:
Reasons Dota 2 >>> League of Legends:
Its launcher doesn't use Adobe Air
Better game engine and TRUE 3d. At any given moment, you can actually move around the camera in game and check out the 3d models beautifully portrayed in Source engine (and if you know what you're doing, in Source 2.0)
Better visuals. Like stated before, the game runs beautifully in source 2. Not only does it look like a video game and not like an aliasing nightmare of a cartoon, but the lighting is just (pardont the pun) leagues above LOL. Leage makes me feel like i'm playing some play station 1 dungeon crawler splashed with random colors
Better balance: Despite Leauge having 1000+ employees working on league of legends and valve only having 28 employee's working on dota 2, dota 2 has better balancing and more frequent updates. They adapt the meta in order to organically change how the game is played to keep things fresh. Riot "forces" you into certain roles whereas valve changes character and item abilities in order to naturally make the game change. There is more of a counter ecosystem in Dota 2. You pick not only to outplay specific heros, but for overall team balance. After hours of patrolling league forums by league members, they all say that in terms of "competitive picking" goes, you just try to pick the best person of that role. Pick the best jungler you can, the best tank/melee that you can etc.
Better hero's. Some may argue that this is subjective. Some people like the "tig ole bitties" approach to league character design. Thats valid. However, while league has a good few responses for each character dialogue wise... every SINGLE hero in dota 2 has 20 minutes or more of dialoguel. Holy shit.
Heros are FREE. Not only do you not have to spend any real money for heros, they're all available from your FIRST MATCH. This is another way the meta is more organic. Also, the same 15 or so "champs" in lol are used in the competitive scene. In the international 2014 dota championship, out of their 100+ hero pool, all but like 13 heros were played (i'll have to check that number for sure, but its a small proportion of their roster)
The game is very challenging. Leauge of legends is kinda like candy crush. Its bright, colorful, easy, and casual. Hop on, play a little bit. Dota 2 is like chess. Its refined, it has way more strategy. Every hero has different move speeds, attack animations, attributes, etc. Runes don't require you to play more or pay more like masteries. Denying your own creeps/allies during the laning phase gives more complexity and control over the lane. Blocking your creeps with your body so that you can have safer farm under tower is a HUGE complexity advantage. Waiting till the 45 second mark to attack a neutral camp so that you can pull them to meet your creep wave to pull the lane, or attacking a camp at the 22 or 52 second mark so that you can stack the creep camps, or even placing a ward in the enemies ancients or pull camps isn't something you do in league.
Items have more actives, allowing for more varieity throughout the game. You need a speed boost? Here's your butterfly/mask of madness. Oh, you need a disable? Here's a scythe of vise or a euls scepter. More mobility? try a blinkc dagger or a force staff. Oh you need to deal damage as you take it? grab a blade mail.
League of legends is play/pay more to win. In dota, every single person has the same chances from the very beginning
Better streaming: dota 2's client allows you to not only watch every match you've ever played, but to stream ongoing matches straight from their client. The international 2014 had a prize pool in the 10 millions, and just had a tournament taking up madison square garden.
Why league has more players:
Dota 2 is exclusive to steam users. Why any pc gamer wouldn't use something free like steam is BEYOND ME, but leauge players aren't really like hardcore pc gamers or anything.
League has been around much longer. Leauge has been around years, and dota 2 just came out of beta less than a year ago. People who left dota 1 after they got bored switched to league. After spending all that money in leauge, switching to dota is harder. Its a shame, thats how people got stuck with itunes.
The game is very easy for noobs. You can come into league, die 10 times in lane, and not really hurt your team. You don't lose gold when you die (not really), you don't give YOUR gold to the enemy, all you do is lose time in lane. And after you've died several times, killing you yields less gold. In dota 2, feed a riki 3 or so times and he's usually unstoppable (yes you can buy wards, but gem is pretty core on GOOD riki players, and they use manga/diffusal to remove dust). When i read the league forums, all i see is "omg dota is hardddddd, i'll stick to league".
The same reason why cod is so popular. DAMN TWELVE YEAR OLDS. I played some league before writing this. Everyone is a little kid. I've never met a dota player younger than 18. Like, ever. Usually they're in their twenties. Holy shit, the league players were either 12 or younger, or they were chinese. No wonder theres so many players.
Despite being poorly optimized, league can actually run on a baked potato. Dota 2 takes at least a competant processor and decent gpu to play on max.
Here's my argument. Most people don't give dota 2 the time it needs to get good. They're intimidated. I had friends who played and taught me. Its worth it. After maybe 10 games, you at least start to get it. There just isn't enough depth to league for me. You know... mcdonalds has more customers than my local french restaurant bertrands. And thats not because its cheaper. Its easy, its convenient, it takes no thought. Call of duty (unfortunately) has several more purchases than portal 2, or even half life 2. Its an arcady shooter. Nobody goes on for substance. The story mode is like 4 hours long, its not innovative, requires no thought, and is filled with 12 year olds. Its just how it is
I'll repost tonight before the new chapter and i'll edit this better. I just posted this between classes is all
A game isn’t better if it uses Adobe Air or not, and I don’t know about the game engine but I prefer the graphics on League then Dota 2, I think Dota 2 looks too dull and boring. Also saying Leagues graphics look like a PS1 game shows your one of them Dota 2 fanboys from plain hating on League.
I will admit, there are a few champions in League that simply take no skill and are overpowered, an example would be Garen, he deals too much damage while literally tanking everything. But Dota 2 also has it’s overpowered Heroes like Slark, pick up a Shadow Blade while in a fight just casually go invisible and heal full jump back in, easy. I remember as Slark I went mid, which I got told not to do but still did it, it was overpowered, just farm till 6 and jump in, lower both our health, run into the Fog of War heal full and repeat till fed.
Riot don’t force you into roles either but it’s advised to follow the meta since the roles for each lane are better that way. Like Darius, what can he do when there’s a Ziggs poking from so far away? Nothing. I also don’t see changing the items constantly a good thing, except for buffs/nerfs.
Both League and Dota 2 have a full roster of unique champions and the lore on each are also unique. A longer story doesn’t equal a good one.
I don’t see having every character free as a good thing since you have nothing to work for, by the time you get into ranked in League you will have at least half the champions anyway and while in normals you’d have free champions which will rotate every week for you to try out and use. In the competitive scene nearly every champion is used. Also League isn’t pay to play champions you unlock them with in game currency and it’s your choice whether or not to buy them using in real life money.
Here’s how I see it, League is easy to get used to, but hard to master. While Dota 2 is hard to get used to, but easy to master. Basically Leagues basics are simple but the harder parts of the game take more time to learn/master. While Dota 2 has hard to learn basics but easy to learn “harder” parts of the game.
In my opinion having a game that’s easier to learn is better then hard to learn so that beginners can actually learn how to play without feeling frustrated, leave it for the ranked games/competitions for the harder parts of the game, like League does. Every champion in League also have different move speeds, attack animations, starting stats, etc. Since when did they not?
I agree and disagree about the runes/masteries, while true it could be better to have all players to have every rune/mastery to start with so it’s more fair, but that also would take away the more effort to get runes and the reason to level up for masteries.
League has a lot of actives, and with summoner spells too. You mentioned these items:
Butterfly/Mask of madness, for a speed boost, in League you would use a Zephyr/Youmuu’s Ghost Blade.
Scythe of Vyse/Euls Scepter of Divinity, for a disable. Well actually having items give pure disables like a stun is a big mistake. Lets just give someone another 2.5-3.5 seconds worth of stuns when they have 5 seconds total themselves. That just makes one person 100% dead. In League there’s less CC from items like Randuins Omen which slows their movement speed on active.
Blink Dagger/Force Staff, for more mobility, in League we have Flash for that, and it has a long cool down which makes it less overpowered.
Blade Mail, for reflecting damage back to the attacker, in Legue that would be a Thornmail.
League pay to win? How is that? Champions and Runes are all brought with in game currency which is earned after games and masteries depend on your summoner level. It’s also not pay to win either. If a pro went back onto a level 1 account vs. A level 30 noob, who would win? The one with more skill would, masteries don’t give that much of a benefit to power, runes give more then masteries but don’t change the game from a loss to a win.
In game streaming doesn’t make a game better, it only makes it easier to record the game, and also Riot is working on an in game recorder.
You can’t at all die in lane 10 times and it wont make an effect on the game. It defiantly hurts the team, if you die 10 time to a LeBlanc mid, by the time it reaches 10 minutes in you’re going to have one hell of a hard game.
If you keep dying because you’re new and can’t buy a single items because you lose your gold you finally got because you died, how is anyone going to learn? Also feeding a character 3 kills should not make the game won, that’s too easy.
When you read the forums of people saying that, that’s the Dota 2 fanboy's on Leagues forums.
I agree there’s childish brats on League but I've seen the exact same on Dota 2, and actually I’ve seen them on every game I’ve played.
P.S I suck at putting my point across so I just used your points and either agreed, disagreed, etc.
