I think his mothers name must be extremely important. There would be no reason to include it in his name and for him to say that his family has always had that name. Maybe his family had something greatly impacting the void century or that will end up being Luffy's mom's name so they will be brothers or something

My guess is that his D. Lineage came from his mother side, instead of his father, making the Watel (I hope that's not the actual name, and *********** gives it a better name) are the original D. Holders.
