  1. Chrome to play games via graphics card, processor?
s Google thinking of taking high-graphics 3D video games into the realm of cloud computing? A new mailing list announcement by Chrome programmer Greg Spencer points to just that, as Google is looking to harness your computer?s hardware processor and graphics card to boost the performance of Web content.

On the Chromium development group, Spencer wrote that they have begun building a specialised O3D plug-in for hardware-accelerated 3D graphics in the Chrome browser.

?The O3D team is working on getting O3D integrated into the Chromium build, and we're close to being able to complete our first step towards integration,? he wrote.

The move comes not a month after the announcement of Google?s ?Native Client? program, which enables the browser to harness the power of computer?s CPU.

While the talk right now is about plug-ins, both these technologies will eventually be built into the browser itself.

"We recognize that there is well-justified resistance to installing browser plug-ins. For this reason, we have a strong preference for delivering Native Client pre-installed or built into the browser, and we'll be focusing on that as our main strategy for delivering Native Client to users," said Brad Chen, engineering manager of the Google Native Client effort.

Spencer wrote: "I'll be making the Windows build of Chromium be dependent upon building O3D as part of the build process."

If successful, these technologies could enable a very realistic transition of 3D video gaming to the Web, which is currently largely reliant on Flash-based titles for gaming.

What is even more enticing is the prospect of Google becoming a retailer or distributor for 3D games, playable exclusively on its Chrome browser. It could be a game-changing (sorry, couldn?t resist that one) technology! Perhaps Google could even offer games for free, with advertising support? The possibilities are endless?
  2. New in Facebook: Change your username, upload photos via email
The popular social networking site, Facebook, has introduced two new features that are bound to please quite a few users.

HOW TO CHANGE YOUR USERNAME IN FACEBOOK

First up is the ability to change your username, for those who chose something that they regret. Last month, Facebook had announced the introduction of vanity URLs, where you can pick a custom username to make your profile page as: ? .

At the time, users were advised to "choose wisely" because the username they selected would be stuck with them for life. But well, the social network giant has decided to go back on this and is allowing users to change their username ? but only once!

ReadWriteWeb reports: ?It appears that Facebook has quietly launched a new option in the settings area called ?username? where you have the option to change your username. To find this option, go to ?Settings? at the top-right of the Facebook page and then click on ?Account Settings?. The second option from the top is ?Username?. Press ?Change? to enter in your new username and then click ?Confirm? when you're ready to set it.?

So if you chose a username that you regret, head over quickly to your account and make the necessary changes.

HOW TO UPLOAD PHOTOS AND VIDEOS TO FACEBOOK VIA EMAIL
Facebook is also a popular place to share photographs with friends, and the developers seem to be aware of this. In a new move, you can now upload your photos and videos to your Facebook account just by sending an email with the attached pics.
Lifehacker notes the easy steps to enabling this feature: ?Just log in and head to the Facebook Mobile page, then look for the custom email address under the Upload Photos via Email section. Copy the address, add it to your contacts, and next time you want to upload something to Facebook, just compose and email it to your custom address and attach the files in question. Similarly, if someone sends you photos you want to share, you can simply forward the email and attachments to your custom Facebook address.?

The photos you send via email will go to the "Mobile Upload" photo album by default and follow that album's privacy settings.

  3. Coming soon: 'Halo Legends' ? a series of 7 anime short films
Halo fans, it?s time to pop the champagne. The mega-hit video game franchise is all set to get an anime series of its own, dubbed 'Halo Legends', much in the line of what the Wachowski brothers did with ?AniMatrix? for The Matrix trilogy.

343 Industries ? Microsoft?s ?all Halo, all the time? internal division ? has hired five studios to produce seven new anime short films, the LA Times has reported. The studios themselves are a who?s who of big anime production houses, including Bones, Casio Entertainment, Production I.G., Studio4 C, and Toei Animation.

But the big news is the man at the helm overseeing everything: 343 Industries has put all its faith in AppleSeed director Shinji Aramaki as the creative director of the whole series.

Aramaki is directing his own short anime that tells the history of the Spartans, a warrior class in the game's fictional universe that main character Master Chief is part of. Though Halo isn't particularly popular in Japan ? most of its 27 million units sold have been in North American and Europe ? Aramaki said he's a player and was immediately interested in the possibility.

"I liked that this would be an anthology of human stories told from different characters' perspectives," he said.
Frank O?Connor, creative director of 343 Industries, hinted that Halo Legends will largely deal with events referenced in the games, but never shown in footage.

He was quite taken in with the new anime look, saying: ?It's amazing to see some of the new stuff they're introducing and how neatly it maps to the visual aesthetics in the Halo universe.?

He revealed that Studio4 C's project, tentatively called ?Origins?, is a two-parter that's about 30 minutes long in total and tells the entire 1,00,000 year history of the Halo universe. Another, from Toei, is the only one outside of the official canon and pokes fun at some of the game's characters.

Microsoft is planning to preview the films on Xbox Live later this year, and release them on DVDs and other platforms in early 2010.
