I was thinking more along the lines of how Itachi destroyed his family and showed he is a bad guy to his little brother. Kishi did something similar but in like a reverse. Keeping the final pairing hidden for the average reader while geeting people on the wrong road while still putting a few hidden hints of the real deal. Keeping the real deal hidden but not invisible while walking like doggies the NS is way harder and take way more time than just put hints for a pairing that won't happen.

Kishi gave a lot of hints to NH but they were really well hidden, and moreover since kishi knew that nearly anybody among his readers knew the "rule", then he could go as he please while planting the seed of what we saw.

Like a friend of mine said: It not because you seems to have seen something that it's going to become real.
