Last Dawn [00:00] Chapter 6-Akira

Sasuri said he was ready to go, but there seemed to be no easy way out. The group of rebels trained endlessly for this moment of opportunity and now it all seemed hopeless. The only good news was that most of the ships were focused on them while the others could escape. Sasuri wanted to do something but he had no idea where to start, and as much as he would like to have time to think on the situation he wouldn’t get the chance.
Sasuri: …..Rheon
Rheon: Nothing you can do huh? It was good while it lasted.
Eko: Why are you guys excepting death so easily? We need to fight with everything we’ve got-
Before Eko finished his sentence the drones from the large ship began flying at high speeds toward the smaller ship piloted by Sasuri. Sasuri merely braced for the impact to come while Rheon and Eko stared ahead nervously anticipating the certain death when suddenly the drones did not fire. They actually flew pass their ship and began attacking all of the L.E.A.F pilots in the area. Rheon looked on astonished by what seemed like a miracle.
“We’re not dead!” Rheon and Eko shouted with a wide smile. Sasuri merely let out a sigh but then quickly began to look around the area as the L.E.A.F ships were being decimated. “Why did those drones attack their own ships?” Almost as if someone heard him, a radio signal patched through their headsets and a person began to speak.
???: I’m glad I made it in time. This is Dread speaking, all of the L.E.A.F in the area have been annihilated.
Sasuri: Dread? He took over an entire mothership? That must have been the mission Xian sent him on. He’s good…
Rheon: I could have done that; he’s nothing special.
Eko: Yeah right. Rheon, I didn’t want to tell you this before, but to be honest you kinda suck.
Rheon:…Take it back.
Xian: Dread, are Rheon, Sasuri, and Eko ok?
Dread: Yes, I will open a hatch so they can board the ship. We will meet you at the Darkside.
Xian: Okay good work.
Rheon, Sasuri, and Eko boarded the large ship which now seemed practically harmless. It was almost surreal to still be breathing since not too long ago they were in a state in which they were prepared to die. It is hard to quickly recover from a situation when you are faced with death, unless you are trained to do so, making these thoughts reasonable. The trio discarded their space suits and walked through what seemed like a maze of dead bodies before reaching the cockpit of the large aircraft. At the very front of the cockpit was Dread, who knew they had entered but did not turn back to greet them. The man’s true name was Gabriel, but everyone just called him Dread. He was very tall and wore a shining white robe with silver outlining. His hair was long and black and had a few silver strands.
Eko: Glad you came to help us Dread. I thought I was dead.
Dread: I need you three to man the controls over there. This ship was meant to be run by a few hundred people. I was barely able to manage the ship on my own but it should be easy to perform basic operations with the four of us.
Eko: Hey, was he even listening to me.
Sasuri & Rheon: No one listens to you.
Eko: This is a very dysfunctional team we got up here. I don’t even know why I try.
Rheon: With both of the nearest gates disabled it should be smooth sailing to the moon.
Sasuri: You’re right but I doubt there will be anything easy once we get there.
Eko: Come on Sasuri think positive.
Sasuri: I am positive it is going to be hard to complete the mission.
Eko: That is not what I meant.
As Sasuri and Eko argued about trivial things Rheon gazed upon Earth. He couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like. Is Earth everything people had said it would be? Living in the satellite his whole life, he did not know what natural oxygen felt like. He never saw an ocean or river. He never even heard of soft grass. Everything he learned living there was based on fighting and surviving. The periodic purifications from the L.E.A.F made that even harder. Could a small group of rebels actually make an impact or was this just a result of people who were tired; tired of surviving, tired of fighting, tired of hoping for things that will never come. Rheon wondered if they could actually defeat the L.E.A.F or would this just be a suicide mission because they were subconsciously ready to quit on life. He stared out his window to Earth wondering if he knew exactly why he was doing this.
A girl sat on a chair looking outside her window up at a faded moon. It was morning time so the moon was still visible. It seemed to be a reflection of her eyes which seemed to be like bright sapphires and her hair was bright silver, long and flowing. She was fairly young as she was only seventeen but she could not help but think of her responsibility. She stopped looking out the window and focused on the book in her lap. She has been called the shining one, the spirit oracle, and technically known as Project 0. This would be the first time she would be able to leave Valardia and this could not have come at a better time. There was a light knock on the door. Akira raised her head and exited her thoughts. “Come in…” she said softly. A man with short dark red hair and knight’s armor entered the room with a smile. “Good morning Akira Hikari. Today is the big day.”
“Good morning Phoenix. I am a bit nervous to be honest. I do not know if I can live up to my predecessors. I also wonder how I can be successful just being thrust into the world.” Akira said this looking back down at her book. She has been stuck in the royal district for the full seventeen years of her life. She was now mature enough to leave on her own, and coincidentally the prophecy has now appeared in the book which she has held on to her whole life. Although she was secluded her whole life and was still young, she spent most of her life studying and training for the moment she was called to act. Phoenix walked over to Akira and placed his hand on her shoulder. “It will be okay Akira. Do not forget that I am here to help you as well. My family has served your predecessors as their guardians for years and that won’t change today. I will stick by your side no matter what path you choose.”
Akira: Thank you.
Phoenix: Shall we be going then? Everyone is waiting for you.
Akira: (sigh) I guess.
Akira and Phoenix made their way down a large hall paved with a red and gold carpet. Their steps echoed as they approached the farthest door guarded by two knights. The knights signaled that Akira and Phoenix could pass as they stepped aside. Phoenix opened the door as a bright light seemed to exit out of it only to be replaced by the Valardian council and the king. Once Akira was seated the King of Valardia began to speak.
Valardian King: Behold the spirit oracle and last Lunarian descendent of Evenos. She is the symbol of peace between the nations here on Earth and also between our planet and the satellite. She is also our symbol for hope for a better future as we reconstruct our universe to its former glory and rid the world of the phenomenon known as the great darkness which created the nightmares. For years now the descendants of the man named Evenos have traded his cycle of rage for the message of peace and prosperity, and now the burden of peace will be placed upon her shoulders as she has come of age. This transfer of responsibility is different from its predecessors as this is the descendent to whom the prophecy was revealed to. She has come to speak of her interpretation so that our hearts and souls may be guided in the right direction. I ask that you, my people, listen with open hearts and show her the respect given through her birthright and hard work.
At the end of the kings speech Akira rose up trying to conceal her nervousness as she calmly walked to a podium like structure in the middle of the room. She placed the book she was holding on top and began to speak calmly.
Akira: Thank you your majesty. It is true that this book has been passed down through my family for generations. Through those years the pages within have remained blank; however, the scriptures were revealed to me three days ago, and I think I have gained clarity on what the book foretells.
Akira opened the book then placed her hands on top of the crystal like pages as she closed her eyes. The pages began to illuminate, and her body became enveloped in a bright light. When she spoke it sounded as if her voice was coming from all around the room at once giving it an omniscient quality.
Akira: “The hearts and souls of men will be purged into the darkness along with the world. Death and destruction will reign over the land. As the false light shines at its brightest the greatest shadows will appear and everyone will breathe despair. In the hour of the deepest darkness one will rise out of the abyss in an attempt to bring an era of peace and light the shadows’ hold over the hearts of men; however,….”
The light started to fade as Akira nearly collapsed on the podium. She was breathing heavy and staring straight down at the book which had closed on its own. “That is as far as the prophecy goes for now,” Akira said in a soft voice. Everyone in the room looked in amazement, horror, and disbelief.
Valardian King: So do you understand the prophecy?
Akira: I’m not sure as this was my first time, but I think I do. The three great nations have unearthed the celestial spheres of the past. So far the nations have had a few tensions but have been at peace. I believe the celestial spheres, which will allow rapid growth in technology, will bring war back to the Earth.
Valardian King: What do you suppose we do then?
Akira: Well since we do not know the whereabouts of this hero the book speaks of, I think it is best if we gather all of the spheres and take them to a neutral sight.
Valardian King: Hmmm, as much as I would like to I can’t. The celestial spheres are one of the most powerful objects here on Earth. We cannot let you take them until we are sure the other nations will part with theirs, or else the power will be tipped in their favor.
Akira: This book has been passed down for a moment such as this and you are going to ignore a prophecy of doom because of a political disadvantage? What good will come of waiting for destruction? Are you really going to let your foolish pride ruin the world?
At this moment the prince of Valardia stood up with a look of anger across his face. He had the traditional armor and long hair. “Watch your tone oracle. You might be a Lunarian descendent but we do not take such words lightly.” Listening to the Prince’s response Phoenix also quickly stood up with his hand on his scabbard.
Phoenix: I do not take idle threats lightly either Prince Galen
Galen: Is that a challenge Phoenix
Phoenix:…A warning…
Another high ranking officer named Cyrus, who was very tall, stepped in between them with a slight smile on his face and a silent chuckle. “Well at least we know the prophecy is accurate. Look at all the conflict already.”
Akira: Phoenix please stand down. We did not come here to fight.
Phoenix: As you wish.
Valardian King: You should stand down as well Galen.
Galen: Yes father.
Valardian King: Well I will see what I can do on my part, but until then please explore the country of Valardia. I will personally pay for your expenditures if you choose to travel to the other countries to collect the spheres.
Akira: Thank you your majesty.
Akira and Phoenix walked out of the room and returned to the echoing hallway. The entire time Akira had a somber look on our face disappointed by the outcome of the events that had transpired.
Akira: Well I guess it was not a total loss
Phoenix: Akira, do not be so hard on yourself. You told them what they needed to know.
Akira: I know Phoenix but in my head I thought everything would go so smoothly. It is a prophecy after all. You would think people would you know…not want the world to be destroyed in everlasting darkness.
Phoenix: I’m sure they will come to their senses Akira.
Akira: I sure hope so…I just wish I knew who this hero was. They would make my job a lot easier.
Rheon and the others were approaching the moon and preparing to land when suddenly they received distress signals from the group that landed before them.
Dread: Rheon wake up
Rheon: Huh, what? Mommy I don’t want peanut butter and bananas…
Eko: Um Rheon you might want to wake up! (Before you say anything else embarrassing.)
Rheon: What?! I’m up, I’m up! I didn’t say anything embarrassing did I?
Dread: No, anyway I need everyone here to remain vigilant. We have received a distress signal from the landing party before us. We will see why when we land. Prepare for descent on the darkside of the moon.
Sasuri/Eko/Rheon: Right
As the group landed everything was pitch black. The advanced lighting of the ship only lit the area around them as they looked around for the others. As Dread finalized preparations Sasuri, Eko, and Rheon walked out of the ship and
looked for the others.
Eko: I don’t see them
Rheon: Wait look over there. Is that…is that a piece of one of their ships?!
Sasuri: What could have done that?
“So the rumors are true after all.” Dread said with a blank expression as he walked down to the surface.
Rheon: Rumors? What rumors?
Dread: It was believed that a nightmare was living in this region of the moon which is why no one settled here. It was untraceable for awhile, but when the L.E.A.F finally detected it the nightmare had become too powerful. They have sent multiple squads to annihilate it but they have never returned. They appropriately named the nightmare Darkside. Now it seems like it was more than a rumor after all.
The group just paused thinking of if that is why Xian sent out a distress signal. They also pondered if they were still alive. Almost as if their question was being answered Jack appeared from the shadows bloodied and injuried.
Jack: It caught us by surprise…(cough).. used my clones to lure it away. I don’t know where the others-
Jack collapsed on the ground as the others watched in horror.
Dread: We’re behind schedule as it is. Carry Jack and let us be on our way to the base.
Rheon: Hold on Dread shouldn’t we find Gnome and Xian.
Dread: They will have to look after themselves. Xian told us to complete the mission no matter what. We are on a time limit and we cannot get sidetracked.
Rheon: Listen punk! We’re not leaving anyone behind. Don’t tell me you’re scared of this Darkside?
Dread: You can stand here and argue with yourself. I have a mission to complete.
Rheon: Fine…If you’re going to leave take Jack with you. I’m going to find the others.
Dread: Hopefully you guys make it in time; if not, I will continue the mission. Sasuri are you coming?
Sasuri: No, I will help Rheon find the others as well. It will go faster if we both look.
Dread: Understood.
Dread left the trio as he exited with Jack into a wall of darkness. Rheon and Sasuri looked at each other nervously and then at the remains of what appeared to be Xian’s ship.
Eko: I just noticed something. Dread didn’t ask me if I wanted to come. I feel disrespected.
Sasuri: Do you think they're alive?
Eko: Don’t ignore me!
Rheon: I don’t know but we’re going to find out.
Sasuri: First things first we need to disable those lights, or else the Darkside will be drawn to this area. Also try to mask your spirit energy because nightmares can sense it. Stay close and let’s get through this quickly.
Rheon: Right, disabled lights coming right up
Rheon gathered a ball of energy and sent it flying towards the mother ship’s cockpit creating a moderate explosion as the lights shut off. The group suddenly was swallowed by complete darkness unable to gain a sense of direction. The marched forward into the eternal night when they suddenly heard a horrific roar unlike anything they have heard before. The ground was trembling beneath their feet although the roar was heard from many miles away displaying the power of the creature. It felt like death was upon them.
Sasuri: It’s the Darkside…it knows we’re here.
