"Kurama" (九喇嘛) literally means 'nine lama'. Kishimoto was mainly inspired to create Kurama based on the character with the same name from the manga series Yū Yū Hakusho. The name may also reference Mount Kurama (鞍馬山), the sacred mountain said to be the home of the Tengu Sōjōbō who taught people ninjutsu and other Japanese martial arts what do u guys/girls think ​

Well, the 9 tailed fox is of Asian mythology; in both Japan and China. The name Kurama probably comes from the mountain, rather Kurama from YYH.

A lot of characters come from mythology.
Ex: Goku Son is a Monkey King, and a common name for characters as such. Like Goku from DB and Son Goku from Saiyuki, and even the Four-Tails, Son Goku.
