We all here follow the the manga, and the part there kurama recognized the old man in naruto is still fresh. But there is still a large difference between them still now, naruto doesn't posses the rinnegan yet!
Let make a little flashback on the sage- we know now that he was born as a normal human but is the first to posses chakra thanks to his mother how eat the fruit of the god tree. The god angry to have been stolen his chakra turned into the juubi in order to retrieve his stolen chakra. ( the juubi is the god tree) Thus the sage possess an alomost infinite level of chakra, because we know when naruto uses the sage mode sense that the juubi is an immense amount of natural energy an not chakra.
Back to the sage; when he was in age he started to trained in what way we still don't know, but it sure he does. Because when he fought against the juubi he know how to use sealing jutsu. The sage before sealing the juubi does not posses yet the rinnegan, but the juubi does, and we have seen in different flashback in the manga that his eyes was a rinnegan covered with sharigan commas. Thus we can't say that the eyes of the juubi was a sharigan nor a rinnegan, we don't know yet.
It's after sealing the juubi inside him that he gain possession the these eyes, Maybe naruto will have to go through the prophecy that the sage predict, that he will be back one day. And that day is near>
