Background Info.
History:Kratos was born five years before Kimimaro, with his mother dying during the delivery. He was the first and only other Kaguya to exhibit the ability to use the Shikotsumyaku after it was supposedly sealed and forgotten by the Kaguya clan generations before.
The reasons why the Kaguya clan sealed their power was because the Shikotsumyaku brought changes to their body structure which caused a terminal illness to appear in them. Yet, despite being sealed, the power would resurface in Kratos and as he grew up, he would show signs of incredible potential. He also developed an insatiable bloodlust, even against his peers and with the exception of his father. Unable to neither tap the power of their own prodigy nor control his bloodlust, the Kaguya clan started to fear Kratos even though he was at the early age of 3, and decided to sell him to a war-wager in order to fund their own ambitions. The situation was different for Kimimaro when he was born 2 years later; since he wasn’t thirsty for blood, the Kaguya clan was able to keep him under control and thus they kept him. Kratos’ father was therefore unable to do anything against the clan’s will.
Kratos’ master, the war-wager Ares from Amegakure, was successful in breaking him and turning him into an on-command killing machine. He also helped him fully developed his powers, but as Kratos progressed, signs of the terminal illness associated with the Shikotsumyaku would show. Ares therefore attempted to cure Kratos by having him undergo a lot of experimental treatments over several years. And contrarily to Kabuto’s treatments on Kimimaro, Ares succeeded to remedy to the illness. Kratos’ bones would henceforth bear red streaks as a sign that they are successfully containing the illness.
Overly excited to see his creation in action, Ares taught him two things,one was how to use rain techniques and the beautiful art of illusion.Then later ares, ordered Kratos to the first war mission that came to him. Kratos thus went to assist shinobis of the Mist Village to fight an invading force, unaware that his opponents were the Kaguya clan. As he easily sliced and smashed through their mighty forces, he earned his title of “God of War” from the shinobis of the Mist Village who were present on the battlefield. And on that same day, one of his opponents marked his memory; although he was dying by the hands of Kratos, he never stopped to look at him with eyes filled with joy
and pride.
Once the day was over, Kratos started to have nightmares every night with the scene of that mystifying opponent playing over and over again, until soon enough he would recognize the face of that opponent as being that of his father, the only person he ever had affection for. His regrets helped him to break free from his master’s control. Going berserk, he turned against Ares,talking his mysterous illusion harp and killed him while destroying his organization.
After recovering his freedom, Kratos disappeared a while. He took the time to think back over his life and changed. He was no more bloodthirsty, yet the only way he knew to survive the shinobi world was on the battlefield. Thus he became a mercenary of the village hidden in the mist, choosing war missions where he would help the oppressed as an effort to also redeem himself from his past sins. The title of “God of War” would live on.
