When it boils down to close quarter combat Boruto manages to fool Ao twice with his shadow clones. Boruto somehow manages to slip away to get into his blind spot and he literally striked him fast enough before Ao could react.
A jounin should easily see this coming but yet Boruto was completely one step ahead. It's true that Boruto received help from the others, but he mostly did the work.
Also, Ao is a crippled old man who's incapable of fighting taijutsu despite he was able to casually dealing against everyone. However Ao hasn't used any of his ninja techniques or genjutsu not for a single time.
The writers definitely nerfed Ao as hell and it seems to me that if Ao had the Byakugan, that puts Team Konohamaru even greater disadvantages. We know Byakugan depends on how skilled the user is. In that case, Ao would be be ridiculous too OP combining t with his Scientific ninja tools and his battle expertise if his byakugan remains to be active in his possesion.
Konohamaru made some implication that his Byakugan with no blindspot would be nearly impossible to be dealt with.
Ao was given a title as the "Byakugan Assasin" which likely means in his prime, that not only he excels his taijutsu, ninjutsu, and genjutsu alone but also his byakugan gives him special prowess that ultimately makes him special.
However, Ao lost his battle instinct when he completely abandoned his ninja style and in exchange he he gained ultimate power by relying on advanced technological weapons.
