Chapter 3: At Night
Kiba: Your turn buddy. We gotta take shifts in case somebody actually does find us.
Akamaru gave a small groan of protest, but a quick scratch behind the ear and neck were enough payments for him to submit to Kiba's will. Rising on his four paws, the canine gives a quick sniff of the area, already searching for potential predators. His master needed him. Failure to protect him was not an option. He was the one who had saved him from the hell that was the Konoha animal shelter, after all... It wasn't long until Kiba closed his eyes and drifted into a daze.
Akamaru licked his master's cheek before jumping down onto the rigid branch supporting them. He estimated that this watch would take several hours, so it was best to not get too comfortable. Overall it wasn't too tough of a job. The worse thing about these watches were usually their dullness. The only thing that earned the slightest bit of acknowledgement was the aggravating itch that recently caught on. Perhaps they passed through a bunch of poison ivy by mistake? Whatever the cause, nothing was going to stop him from securing his master's safety.
Suddenly, a loud bang is heard in the distance. Kiba awakens in a startle, almost kicking Akamaru off their sanctuary. While this was technically a good thing, Kiba didn't feel like it. That sound could only mean one thing... that somebody had died today.
Meanwhile...
Sakura had never felt so alone in her life. The shot only confirmed the reality of the situation: eleven people were meant to die in this game, and she definitely did not have the odds on her side. Shedding tears, Sakura bit her lip as she stopped herself in her tracks. What plan did she have? Did she hope that the rest of the contenders would somehow end up killing themselves before ever finding her? Why was she wasting the last moments of her life avoiding the inevitable? She wanted to be spending it was Sasuke. She wanted to live out her dream of a husband and three children, naturally living out the years she had in bliss. The Master's genjutsu was meant to allow all men and women to live out these dreams... but alas, it was not so. Ever since the Great Rebellion decades ago, this was the Master's way of punishing his children for their “sins”.
Sakura stomped whimpering. Slowly calming down and letting the truth sink in, she took off her shoes and ran her feet through the fine blades of grass. If she was going to die here, then so be it. Good luck forcing her to compete against her will. Weaving between the forest's natural pathways, Sakura examined everything: from the small animals looking at her with utmost caution to the exotic flowers adding color to the muddy green and brown environment.
An acorn hit her in the end. Looking up, she sees a rustle of tree leaves flowing with the sudden wind. She kneels to the ground, and gently picks up her attacker. Holding the acorn in her palm, she cups the seed in her hands and with a gulp of air, gently breathes on this potential life. She had always wanted to be in the medical field.. treating people and animals was what she was good at. She had hoped it would be a vital aspect in the Games, but with her current luck the results wouldn't change.
Sakura then rubs her forehead where the acorn had hit her. She would never forget how much agony the size of her forehead had caused her during her childhood. The worst part was that it truly was the only interesting factor about her.. or at least that's how she felt. Ino was the only true friend that would care for her back in the day. Wonder what she was up to now. They were equally skilled, give or take. Could she actually pull through this game somehow? Maybe with her female charm? While she buried the acorn in the dirt, another acorn hit her square in the head. Frustrated, she took a glance up to see what was the cause of all the ruckus.
It was Neji Hyuuga.
