Chapter 2: The Sad Truth
The sound of the cannon signaled the Kunoichi's death. Meanwhile, Naruto was still determined to get one of the bags.
Naruto: "Damnit Lee! I only wanted one of them!"
Naruto threw 3 shuriken at Lee to further state his anger, which Lee easily dodged. Years of close combat training have done him well.
Rock Lee: "Naruto, it is useless to persist wasting your chakra like this. Run back and protect your friends. This is my friendly advice to you!"
Lee knew what position he was in. If he used too many of the inner gates now against Sasuke and Neji, than he could easily fall victim to other competitors in his weakened state. But if he waited it out.. Neji would surely keep a track of him with his Byakugan and set out to kill him before he did the same. He did not doubt Neji's ability to ambush him, not with those eyes. His best shot would be to make an alliance with sensor ninjas that can't adequately defend themselves. Finding a proper team would probably take a while though, and Naruto has his eye set on those supplies that Lee most desperately needed. If Naruto didn't move quick.. he would have to finish him for good.
Naruto: "Bushy brows!!!"
Naruto shouted as he created a Rasengan using the clone on his right. After so much practice, he was getting good at executing his clone and Rasengan, both in speed and in style. Naruto than sprinted at Lee with the concentrated ball of chakra in his hand, ready to strike. Lee gave a mental sigh. Naruto knew nothing about tactics... such a predictable manner could never hit him.
Rock Lee: "I'm sorry Naruto, but if you insist, than I have no other ch-" POOF
Suddenly, the three shuriken transformed into Naruto clones. Stunned by the slick action, Lee lost track in his actions and was forced to grab Naruto's arm in mid-thrust. He gave a slick kick that knocked Naruto back into the clone that was trailing behind the real one, dispersing it in the process. But he was too late. Meanwhile, the clones had each picked up a bag of supplies and had already used another clone technique by the time Lee was finished with his counter-attack. Now, 20 of each clone was seen holding their version of supplies on their back, heading towards the forest and out of sight. Lee silently cursed under his breath, not because the clones were running away with the bags, but because he was now forced to make a heart-breaking decision.
Rock Lee: "You should not have done that Naruto. Now I will be forced to kill you. It is the only way to take out those many clones in one go."
Naruto looked distraught. Obviously thinking about murder and witnessing it were two different things.. much more if you're the victim. Not very far off from them, Sasuke and Neji were having a much more even battle. Several circles of pressed dirt were visible, proof of a talented Hyuuga who had understood the fundamentals of their chakra control and mastered the Heavenly Spin technique. Although Naruto couldn't see it, one or two of Sasuke's opening points were also blasted, interrupting some of his offenses from time to time. Rock Lee slowly untied the bandages on his arms, and looked at Naruto with an expressionless face.
Naruto: "Please bush brows... there has to be another way. We constantly competed with each other before, but when were we controlled to the point that we killed our own companions off!"
Naruto shed tears. In the end, this must have been friendship's line. Life or death. Now that such a bond had a capacity.. the whole thing just felt so much weaker to him.
Rock Lee: "Naruto, I do not like it either, but think logically. If we do not fight each other, than they will end up killing us all. Even if we were to kill ourselves for the sake of somebody else's life, are we not simply weighing lives just as before? No Naruto, this is the best way to go about it. Maybe one day, a miracle will happen, and there will be no Konoha Hunger Games. This nightmare might one day be non existent. But that is not our choice to make; we are simply sacrificial pawns trapped in an unfavorable section of a timeline. With that said..."
It happened in a flash. Naruto felt his jaw nearly break as Rock Lee sent him flying several meters into the air with one quick yet powerful kick. All Naruto saw was the bright sun in the sky as he only suddenly became aware of Rock Lee behind him, ready to kill him using his signature attack. Naruto felt the heat of the sun graze his face. Maybe it was better this way... anything to let him escape this grim, cursed world. But this heat.. why was it so hot? Naruto only had a second to realize that a fireball was zooming right in their direction. Reality took over, and Naruto quickly turned in mid-air in an attempt to avoid the blast. Unfortunately, it was too late. It seemed that both he and Lee had gotten hit hard. However, it seemed that Lee was even more damaged than Naruto. In a panic, Naruto ran for his life into the woods, anything to get away from the battlefield now. Lee ran off in the other direction, too wounded to care about supplies any longer as part of his suit still held traces of fire onto them.
Neji and Sasuke were both panting heavily. Great minds think alike; they couldn't put any more strength into this battle. It was too early to risk an injury and become victims to other competitors, who would jump on the chance. Finally, Neji made the swift decision to take what he could and retreat for now. He had the advantage; he had the superior eyes. Neji grabbed a heavy looking supply of food, and spouted at Sasuke before leaving.
Neji: "I don't care how much of a genius you say you are. My destiny is to win. Eleven graves were made the second I was chosen to compete in this game."
With that, Neji retreated into the dark forest. Sasuke stiffened as he held his injured arm and slowly walked towards the last bag. Carelessly, he took a nearby kunai and slashed open the straps. He almost croaked. This bag was a dud! All that was in it were a bunch of well crafted rocks and a note. Sasuke spit at the ground as he read the lines over and over in his head. "Bad luck". Sasuke's Sharingan roared.
Sasuke: "It doesn't matter. Compared to the hazards of the First Great Ninja War, these conditions are pitiful handicaps in an attempt to weaken an Uchiha to regular ninja standards. Eleven graves will be dug today, but my name will not be among them."
And with that, Sasuke followed the rest into the barren land.
Night fell, and only the occasional sound of birds cracked the silence. Although if you were to listen carefully enough, you may find a chatter of teeth ringing inside a death-ridden cave far beyond the circle where the 12 once stood. Inside this cave, a depressed and miserable blonde girl tried calming herself with images of her family. In her head, they were congratulating her on her victory, telling her that they always knew she would pull through. She lowered her head to her knees. What were they thinking now? Their princess... stranded in a dark cave, with not the slightest intention of ever coming out. Oh how much she wanted to take the nearest stone.. and-
???: "Ino Yamanaka."
She gasped as her gaze fell upon three figures at the entrance of the cave, their silhouettes outlined against the moonlight. She got on her feet, and supported herself against the cave wall.
Shikamaru: "Let's go."
Choji and Hinata looked nervous and pitiful at Ino's current condition, but were glad to have her with them nonetheless.
