I feel like black blades are the highest quality of the blades in the One Piece world. Hancock recognized his blade and commented that it was fit for the World's Strongest Man, and the most prized blade in all of Wano, the place that epitomized swordsmanship, is a black blade. This was probably just Mihawk being clever, saying that imbuing your blade with Koka will make it as though it were among the highest class of blades, the black blades.
Ichimonji is equal to Shusui and it isn't black.

Hancock does not know shit about blades. It was Tashigi.

OT: Well considering the blade has been named "Night" it should be clear that the blade has been black from the very moment it was created and not after it came into Mihawk's possession. I think this is a better reason than "Crocodiles hook would have broken or at least dented" to settle the topic.

Then he must easily be top tier users of CoA, it's expected anyways. I expect him and Dragon to be at the pinnacle of CoA.

Edit: We can probably dismiss the idea of his sword always being coated in CoA because if that was the case, Crocodile's hook would of broke or at least gotten dented.
IIRC just the handle of the sword hit the hook and even with that I think Mihawk was taking it too lightly at the moment. He was going for luffy after all and as he himself has said, he only uses that much strength which is necessary.

Mihawk actually said he won't hold back against Luffy.

I hardly think "The child of the Next generation" falls under the tag of "rabbit". But I cannot change what you want to think, you can continue the speculation.

I think when he said that he won't hold back, he was implying that he won't restrain himself from fighting/killing Luffy not that he'll fight Luffy with his full power.

I think the sword slash that Mihawk used which slashed up the Tsunami was his strongest slash, unlike the one he used to slash zoro.

By no means it was his best. He didn't use haki and he puled that shit without even trying.

The fact that he pulled that shit without even trying is called "Finesse". You don't need to make a face like you are constipating every time you use your strongest shit (lol). Also he used a similar attack against WB and it was stated in the manga that it was the strongest slash, and the moment it was deflected by WB's underling, Mihawk did not bother with another attack.

But I agree that it may not have been a pull out all stops mihawk that was trying to get luffy, but he was not holding back his strength that much is for sure.

Is the sword originally black or is it simply always clad with Mihawk's haki visually? Mihawk certainly seemed to imply the latter when reading ***********'s translation:

I wondered the same thing. Then i thought about it and my answer was similar to Mr Silmarill's .

Would be weird. Mihawk's blade was always black , even before Oda came up with the concept of black haki , but maybe this could just be a convenient coincidence
The sword is also black when it's on his back.. why would he coat his swords when cruising aroudn the ocean.. Also Zoro taking a haki imbued slash at the beginning of One Piece ?
Nevertheless, automatic haki activated when in conflict with another would be an awesome feat shown by Mihawk

Okay? I'm not talking about power, I'm talking the quality of the material the blade is made of.

Ah turns out I was mistaken, it was actually an anime only seen and she was talking about his epithet of ¨Hawk-Eye.¨

Quality of the material the blade is made of is what makes a sword strong.

The handle of the sword? :S Doesn't seem that way in the manga/anime:

We're considering if Mihawk's blade is always coated in CoA at all times. It's possible but Croc. intercepted Mihawk with his hook and showed no signs of damage.

To be honest the thought of the blade always being coated in Haki had occurred to me before, however the whole concept of Mihawk not being able to hurt Buggy would contradict this you know...unless Buggy was able to split his body fast enough to avoid Mihawk's cuts...?

CoA on swords is still a confusing matter to be honest...
