I just read a post that argued Minato was able to subjugate the Kyuubi when he went to battle. This is most likely false. Minato most likely gained control of the Kyuubi when he was fighting it inside of the death god's stomach as per the rules of the contract he signed with the death god upon sealing. I can presume this to be true since Naruto gained control of the Kyuubi in the same way.
