So the Sannin were fine right because it was a bit of pointless referencing to an old folklore of Japan. One of my other favourite anime series also has religious / mythological imagery.......
....Neon Genesis Evangelion gets a lot of flack for having lots of Christian religious symbolism, imagery that the studio confessed had no actual meaning and were just vapid ideas thrown in there. As a big fan of this stuff I say that Naruto is the same and it's all lost potential that becomes actively hurtful to the manga
But then Shippuden takes these references bizarrely far and cuts into the main plot just to do them. Kaguya Ootsutsuki. Izanami and Izanagi being convoluted lameness garbage. Orochimaru made relevant again and then immediately killed after loads of build-up to create a single pointless scene of Susanoo sealing an 8 tailed serpent. Added nothing to the series.
Later tItachi kills Nagato's three-legged crow, a reference to Yatagarasu. Completely pointless and appreciated by few. And it's always stuff that COMPLETELY interferes with the plot in very important moments. The Sannin were oddly unrelated but harmless, but Itachi and Kaguya are nonsense.
I was bugged by this early into Shippuden, the moon stuff begun to take the piss.
