Itachi is a clear sign of a retcon, his story as a good guy was so poorly handled and some instances just seem like blatant handwaves.

It isn't new for authors to be pressured into doing something they didn't originally intend on. Kishimoto himself has admitted to this a few times in the past, for instance he was pressured into cutting the Immortals arc short by his editors because they wanted the focus back onto Sasuke.

Other authors have even completely given up on their creative independence, like how Akira Toriyama always intended on Gohan surpassing Goku and being the hero, but was constantly forced to make Goku the reigning champ by his editors.

It's funny how people who think Kishimoto changed his mind have literally zero facts to back them up.

Itachi chose not to kill Konoha jounin's or Jiraiya. That alone gave the hints that his was a good guy.

Kishimoto never changed his mind about Itachi.

Sasuke in chapter 7 said this:
You must be registered for see images

And this was explained after the truth was revealed about Itachi (chapter 403):
You must be registered for see images
I used to really agree with UltimateDeadpool right above me, but I think this one I quoted clears it up. You can argue he did not want to waste Amaterasu on the Jounin and all because he would eventually go blind, but that first part in Chapter makes it clear. There's no real argument against that. I guess Kishi really did plan it all out.

Itachi commited genocide. He tortured his little brother, physically and mentally. Just when when Sasuke moved on from his dark past/painful memories, via his new Konaha friends , Itachi once again took away Sasuke's happiness. Even ordered him to kill Naruto to get revenge.

Not a good guy.

If Itachi was never meant to be good, that would change a significant amount of the plot. I don't find it shocking he's always been good as in the manga old you'll notice Itachi refrained from killing anyone that would significantly affect Sasuke's life.

IDK I always felt a little skeptical of the uchiha Clan ever since Sasuke's flashback to his childhood with Itachi

Fugaku drew my attention the most, though initially it seem that he is concerned about the prestige of the clan in the leaf you can see from his choice of words that he is planning something and that Itachi's accession into the ANBU was critical to whatever he was planning,my questions were:

Why is being in an organization as covert and secretly known as the ANBU so important to the public prestige he supposedly sought in the village? No one outside the ANBU but the higher ups would even know Itachi was in the ANBU.

Why is every mission Fugaku wants Itachi to go on beneficial for just the clan and not the village as a whole?

What mission could Itachi have that he couldn't tell his Father anything? Why not simply lie and say he was going to some foreign land? Why mention the mission at all? He could simply faked agreement with his father and killed them all later.

Why did Itachi suddenly withdraw from his family? That notes some sort of anxiety about what he was about to do. A man as sociopathic and cold like Itachi was originally made out to be would not show the least bit of nervousness or conflict about what he was planning, if Itachi was truly remorseless he could have laughed and joked in his families faces all while planning his genocide.

I'm not saying I always believed Itachi to be an undercover good guy but I always had my suspicions about him and the Uchiha clan.

I knew that Itachi was in fact kind of a good guy as he protected Konoha.
hes nowhere near a good guy. hes a brutal evil sociopath. and no he didnt protect konoha. he let pain destroy it
I began questioning whether Kishimoto actually planned all along that Itachi was in fact a good guy
which he isnt. the moment he tortured his own brother he was no longer anywhere near good.
Kishimoto just came up with this idea to make him a nice guy
so nice guys torture innocent people?
I feel like he always knew that Itachi would be a good guy. Especially with the whole infiltrating konoha with kisame. If he was indeed a bad guy Asuma, kurenai, and kakashi, sasuke, and naruto would have been dead.
how does that prove hes not a bad guy? if hes a good guy hewouldnt have slowly and brutally tortured and beat sasuke to near death. you knew he would be a good guy when he was never one at all? especially with the whole torturing sauske inot a coma thing.
. Itachi did not kill or even try to kill if my memory serves me right any of the leaf's joinin when they caught him even though he likely could have and easily taken Naruto anytime he wanted
so murder is the only evil action anyone can commit? is that what your saying? fighting without intention to kill means your a noble hero?
itachi invading the leaf and attacking konoha jounins means he has declared war on the entire village.
Furthermore, one could hypothesize that he knew Tsunade was near to treat Kakashi and Sasuke and possibly even spied on Sasuke at times to be sure he was okay
and furthermore, he made sure sasuke was completelty mentally and physically shattered and broken and in as much pain as possible
. He was also very compassionate and seemingly selfless before the massacre, and though I can't remember when exactly this part was shown, he showed distaste for the Uchiha's arrogance and his father's neglect toward Sasuke.
yet showed arrogant neglect and sociopathy after the massacre himself

He consistently holds back Kisame, he doesn't even make an effort to really kill the Jonin with Kakashi even pondering why Itachi didn't finish him in that fight. He also runs from Jiraiya instead of fighting which is an admittedly arguable point, but I thought it possible that he could take on Jiraiya.
he holds back because he likes leaving people alive and torturing them and mocking them. leaving kakashi in a coma after torturing him seems much more fun for him as it increases kakashis pain.
he ran from jiraiya because he didnt want to leave himself almost dead.

Also, we first see Amaterasu here, Itachi only uses it to escape, not even to fight anybody. Also, the dude fights like a pacifist, vying for the least violent of all routes EVERY single time for the few episodes/chapters we see him. Not exactly a thrill-killer personality.
he is one of the most violent and cruel psychopathic monsters in the series.
every single time he chooses to brutally and savagely torture sasuke for several days and slowly beat him into a coma while breaking his bones like a sadisitc monster. even kisame was horrified by the brutality.
itachi fights like a monster whos lost his mind and is beating a small child into a coma like sasuke was an insect to be stepped on

The only person he even goes hard on is Sasuke, which, I'm just going with his plan for Sasuke to become a Konoha hero was a huge gamble that would've worked had it not been coupled with the temptations of Oro.
he had no such plan because its impossible.
how the hell will sasuike be a hero of konoha when hes been tortured and beaten into madness?
Itachi is very smart an played his role in protecting Sasuke and Konoha and posing as a disgrace and spying on the Akatsuki with FLAWLESS execution. ALL HAIL LORD ITACHI!!!
wrong. itachi is very dumb and made sure that sasuke and konoha were not safe at all. he did nothing to even slow dow akatsuki and told konoha nothing at all about them which ensured konoha getting massacred by pain. he tortured sauske into insanity and beat him inot a coma.
Itachi chose not to kill Konoha jounin's or Jiraiya. That alone gave the hints that his was a good guy.
yes he did
"take kakashi out. its time for these people to disappear". also torturing kakashi automatically gave the hiutns he really is just a cruel psychopath who likes to cause pain in others.
Kakashi questioned why Itachi didn't kill him with Tsukuyomi
and then immediately after, itachi orders kisame to murder kakashi in cold blood
Itachi stated he did not want to kill Asuma or Kurenai
again not wanting to doesnt mean you wont.
Kisame questioned why Itachi is retreating from Jiraiya when he could have easily ended his life with Tsukuyomi or Amaterasu in that enclosed motel.
so itachi retreats from jiraiya but tortures kakashi for 3 days...
Kakashi noticed that Itachi was completely holding back, as refrained he from going all out, not even scratching the surface of his potential.
madara said it.
"why would an adult go all out on a kid"
He is very smart and does not show off his OP skills.
so someone whos very smart sabotages all his own plans like a moron?

Kakashi was wondering why didn't Itachi kill him, and he also speaked to everyone with respect even politely telling Kakashi to get out of their way. If Itachi wanted to he could have killed all of them with Amaetasu alone. Instead of escaping like he did.
again
"why would an adult go all out on an ant".
and
"kisame take kakashi out. its time for these people to disappear".
itachi ordered their deaths. he just didnt want to fight gai.
ou'll notice Itachi refrained from killing anyone that would significantly affect Sasuke's life.
and youll notice that itachi brutally tortured them instead and put them in comas as well as helped akatsuki obtain living nukes, declared war on konoha and numerous other insane brutal crimes. he tried to kill kakashi in absolute cold blood.

I'm not saying I always believed Itachi to be an undercover good guy
which he never is
if Itachi was truly remorseless he could have laughed and joked in his families faces all while planning his genocide.
and if he was truly remorseful to anyone he could have responded to his crimes with sympathy or apologies. instead he adopted the stone cold "your an ant to me" sociopath personality
