Assuming that the translations are done with proper english and not attempted-proper english...
If a reader understands character development and is able to comprehend Kishimoto's style, then overcoming the puzzles in this manga is not difficult at all:
Point #1
Every character kept alive--almost all of them--has a personality. If the character is a ninja, then they fall within one of the three character types of the three-man team: smart but lacking natural strength (Sakura), strong but not naturally wise (Naruto), or balanced and level-headed (Sasuke). And even if the nin does not belong to a team, they fall near one of those types--through their actions and goals.

Point #2
And assuming that "you will be assigned to Team Kakashi" is a literal translation, I'm assuming that Sai is the level-headed type (thus replacing Sasuke in the trinity).
Also: Kakashi speaks of needing to submit new team lists in the first chapters of part 2, so this may have been in the works since that moment, thus Kakashi planned this to sort of balance their fighting power. Which would elimate the idea of Sai being a villian, though I have views on that as well.

Point #3
As an english-speaker, the sentence "your age will not change drastically" only logically means that Sai will not have to alter the way it acts too much if pretending it is younger. Thus it is likely Sai is human in some way. Or that the translation I'm basing this off is wrong.

Point #4
Every main character has had a childhood of some type. And with that childhood came experiences and personality development. Thus there is no need to study or practice being human, unless...the Sai character was raised in isolation and was made to believe it is not human.

Point #4
Sai refers to itself as a "thing."

Point #5
The old man is not wearing any ID, i.e. headband, so the headband that Sai is wearing may just be a fake one.

Point #5
There have been instances of nin being in Konoha w/o permission and w/o being found out, i.e. Oro, Akatsuki, etc.

Thus....
Conclusion:
Its logical to think that "Sai" is some thing that has a soul but no personality. And that these are the new antagonists.
I'm not sure what "assigned" means as it is hard to imagine Kakashi replacing a member of his team. Though he does mention in 247 "i have to create and submit new teams" or something to that effect.
I think the way an english speaker understands this is that Sai is to keep tabs on Kakashi's team, or else join and do so.

Other less important things:
"Sai" roughly means "together"
Note: If the translations don't bring the concepts into english well, then reasoning is limited and thus may be flawed--as english is my first language.
Also, I can't read every post on the forums--I have a life--thus I won't claim to be the first to state these things.

I started laughing so hard when you said Sasuke was level-headed. I just can't even stop.

You make absolutely no sense when addressing Sai in any manner and your first paragraph or point 1 as you call it does not provide the depth and analyzation you think it does. You name two traits, level headed and intelligent when your point was supposedly to to regulate every ninja within three main personality types (Which is stupid since not everyone in the show is bound by those two traits)

Next time (Since your so busy with "Life" and everything,And apparently too busy to from proper ideas)take your time to spin a cohesive idea then place it on narutobase.

To be fair Sasuke was level headed at the beginning somewhat. Now he has violent mood swings. Though Sasuke is a little bit different after speaking to the hokages.
