I thought it was funny that Naruto and Minato's massive senjutsu rasengan only stalemated with Obito's black fluid shield, but a single punch from Gai was able to propel Madara hard enough that he broke straight through a similar shield.

Also, the Gokage are not the automatically strongest people in the world. They are just some of the stronger people willing to take the responsibility of an entire village. Jiraiya was first in line to become Hokage before Tsunade but he did not want the responsibility of it.

Here are some characters above the Gokage in either power and story relevance (And in some cases both): Itachi, Sasuke, Naruto, Kabuto, Obito, Orochimaru, Jiraiya, and Killer Bee.

those five are just fodder:
Tsunade:no brain, just healing and strengtg
Raikage: Complete idiot, was going to die to hebi sasuke
Gaara: only defence, much like fodder
Onoki:too old
Meinly has kkg but not any good skills

Yeah, but he did have the chance to separate them one on one. Tsunade was the strongest physically, A was the fastest, Oonoki is the most experienced, Garra has the least experience and he has the earth style, Mei has a bloodline ability but is the weakest.

Gai is basically all of them rolled into one person.

Eight Celestial Gates was said to surpass Hokage level back at the Chuunin Exams. The only thing is amiss is that the Gokage survived that fight at all, especially Tsunade not bleeding to death after being bisected. That's just ridiculous.
