Honestly the only Author I know of who probably actually trolls his fans, would be GR Martin. Kishimoto seems to enjoy having fairly simple plots with surprise twists (or predictable twists, but I was surprised at times). Nothing in Gaiden seemed to imply that Kishimoto was going for a complex plot.
I'm sure he cares,after all,theree are many shippers who buy the manga for their ship so more $$ for himI doubt he even cares for shippers. Although they might have supplied him an idea to use it due to their tantrums.
Writer and his team needed an excuse to activate Sarada's sharingan before upcoming movie or other projects they might have or just to show Uchiha linage surviving. Uchiha kids don't get one if they don't face some severe shock, after all...
