Kishi develops side characters very well.

People constantly say that Kishi hasn't done well with developing the side characters. I say that this statement is incorrect. With most of the side characters, we have gotten a proper explanation of their drives and motivations throughout the series. For instance:

Lee: His motivation to get stronger through hard work with taijutsu training is his painful childhood where he was made fun of and underestimated for not being able to use ninjutsu or genjutsu. It is also his desire to defeat his rivals (Neji, Naruto, Gaara, Sasuke) and to please his sensei. Most of all, it is youth.

Hinata: Her motivation and drive comes from the encouragement that Naruto has given her since childhood despite her father's constant abuse and neglect of Hinata. This abuse and neglect was given to Hinata because she was weak. It caused her to be shy and timid for many years until Naruto came and started encouraging her. It also helped when Neji started being nice.

Neji: His motivation to believe solely in destiny was the cruel and unfair demise of his father. This tragic event caused Neji to despise the main house (who were partially responsible for his father's death) and adopt a more pessimistic view of life. This was until he met a humbling defeat at the hands of Naruto at the chuunin exams, after which Hiashi came and told him that Hizashi chose to die. This information along with the fact that Naruto (who had been dubbed a loser from the beginning) defeated him made Neji embrace a new feeling of optimism towards life that he would carry until his death (that he willingly chose) 3 years later.

Do you people see? These are all examples of deep character development. A lot of the other side characters have stories like these too.

Furthermore, that is really all the development they need seeing as how they were not significant in helping to stop the eye of the moon plan and their back stories don't really relate to the actions of the main villains like the back stories of the main characters (Naruto and Sasuke) do. Spending a lot of time on side characters who have already been developed enough, is a waste of time and panel space.
They are not that significant to the plot.

It's not the same with all side characters. I would kill for some more intel on Yahiko.

I don't agree with the characters being developed enough either. There should have been a tittle development for the others teams, just like team 10 got their time to shine. I can think of a million ways, but if might not be plot involved.

That is because we pretty much got all the necessary development for the side characters in part 1. They are not that relevant, so they didn't need much development in part 2.

That's what I find funny about Kishimoto and this whole damn thing. Some of the side characters seem more interesting than the main characters.

I personally think the Seven Swordsmen should have had more screentime. They could have made some nice battles.

Yahiko wasn't that relevant to the plot. All we needed to know was that his death was Nagato's inspiration to become Pain.

Care to explain some of these ways?

No.all side characters revolve around a certain thing, and that completely defines them.

Hinata:I'm not sure she has a single panel were she's not fawning over a certain main character

kiba: a loser.in his first fight he told naruto he wanted to become hokage just to taunt him.his best friend is a freakin dog

Tenten: has absolutely nothing going on

Shino: a creepy bug guy who has psychosocial problems.. how original

The entire Konoha 11 are immensely underdeveloped. The gap between main character development like Naruto or Madara and side character development like Rock Lee or Neji is too large. You've just given us the entire character synopsis of Neji, Rocklee, and Hinata, in about a paragraph. If you were to do a character synopsis of a well developed character like Itachi, or Gaara, you would probably end up with 5-6 paragraphs. And you say they are insignificant and irrelevant to the main story plot, but only because Kishimoto made them irrelevant by not developing them.

If you can summarize a character with one word or phrase, then they are not developed well.

I agree
Even though naruto has 670+ it's still not that long of a story
The only time side characters get development is when they're relevant to the story
The plot of Naruto is about the sages descendants trying to find peace in their own way

Kishi started with the right ideas, but ultimately shot himself in the foot.

Shikamaru: Actually good development. The problem is... all of the K11 needed to be on Shikamaru's level of development. They were the originally created side characters.

Hinata, Neji, Lee.... all got really good starts and looked amazingly promising during the end of part I..... come part II.... they all disappeared for 95% of the series.

1. Hinata does.... trust me on it.

2. Kiba's dream was to be Hokage. Not to just taunt Naruto. Akamaru is a part of his clan and grew up with him. They're practically brothers.

3. True... but she served as the straight man in Team Gai along with Neji. Got jack shit development.

4. He doesn't really... he communicates fine. Kishi just makes every Shino panel a gag about him being forgotten or that bugs are gross...
