I think he is well written as a ninja, obviously he would not get growth as an adult character who lacks paneltime compared to many but he was a true ninja incarnation in author's side since he gave more depth to purpose of ninja -which is main element of story- and show depth of someone who is a killing machine from beginning. He also had one of the best written death of story imo. He was well for his purposes.
