Dochū Senkō cannot be used in such situation. The sand would be not only too thin, but in extreme curve lines making the traveling rather difficult. Gaara also does not have to be stationary on ground nor keep the sand coming from his direction. ^^that was my line of thought too. Although gaara has access to non chakra infused sand, it isn't as strong if memory serves me right.

And, why exactly can't Kisame make use of the subertarrian travel when facing off against either a large sized sand tsunami, or as a way to slip through any of Gaara's attacks? His jutsu will literally change the state of the sand, making it incredibly doubtful that Gaara can continue to manipulate the sand.

I didn't say he had to remain on the ground. It doesn't really matter, I already said he could be in the air. Gaara's shown to be exhausted when forced to use larger sand based attacks, not from his 'special' chakra infused sand. So, Gaara's not remaining in the air indefinitely. All Kisame needs to do is make use of the subterranean travel often enough, and wait Gaara out. Gaara literally can not kill Kisame because of this.
