kisame gai connection ?

Considering that Kisame is always trying to get guy to remember him through the Manga. Is it a possibility that During the fight where Rin dies, Gai and Kisame might play a part? Or was there a connection that i am not remembering.

They met for the first time in part 1 when Itachi and Kisame fought against Kakashi and Gai etcc.
In Shippuuden Gai didnt recognize Kisame anymore from part 1..
