Itachi's susanoo might have tanked it, but that's because Itachi's susanoo doesn't have a predetermined weakness to Natural Energy.

That's true, but what's overrated is its power.

Sasuke's Kirin might have been lacking in power at that time, but that doesn't mean that Sasuke can't improve upon it. Increasing the energy by increasing the amount of heat in the atmosphere = bigger thunder. Sasuke wasn't even able to use Amaterasu on his own when he first used Kirin.

Even at it's basic form, Kirin is able to demolish the uchiha hideout and pwn a mountain. That power can only grow.

I'll have to make a real kirin thread soon.
