Ok, well let me give you a through explanation
Doton utilizes the earth to create varying techniques that are able to be used at all ranges. of course, Earth is the strongest and most Durable of the techniques making it ideal for defense. it is also.. the most abundant, as there's virtually nowhere you can go without there being Earth, less your on a body of water or something. Now, usually the techniques range from creating spikes to massive walls and onwards.
Now we will begin trying to draw out your Earth Chakra.. I want you to pick up some dirt and were going to try and turn that dirt into a solid rock...

Spreads the chakra evenly throughout the pile, seeping it into the tiny crevices between the particles, coalescing and binding them together. Compresses the chakra further to strengthen the bond.
Phew....squeezes the ball... seems solid.

now we will start with the first and foremost jutsu of doton.
no that you know what to do to mold earth we will focus on manipulating prexisting Earth.
(Doton No Jutsu) - Earth Style Technique
is the first technique and the most basic of the and more importantly the main part of doton.
So, we will begin. With this jutsu. I want you to concentrate and send chakra into to the ground. then by doing so, i want you to visualize what need with this technique, be it a small sheild, shovel.. a few stepping stones to quickly get you into the air.

Argh! Now I know why they say never blame your tools.
Gathers more doton charkra, pushing it through the hand into the kama. Does a cartwheel, reclaiming some lost material from the ground as the kama hits the ground. Further solidifies the kama with more chakra, honing the blade as the cartwheel is finished, swinging the Kama overhead.

Ahh, now you''re getting the hang of it. I think you undertand the gist of that jutsu. but i want you to manipulate the actual earth now, create a few small pillars for me woulda ya..

U_U goood. good. now once you get the hang of that, you will be able to do it spur of the moment using the pillars to send you into the sky, or trip your opponent.
