I think i've been saying otherwise until now, but his bones are indeed a great counter for taijutsu user as it was seen during the Lee vs Kimi match.
Neji can't use Gentle Fist if he can't reach Kimi's body.

his bones are an organic extension of his body that are controlled with chakra and can be used as a medium for chakra to travel like neji did with kidos webs.

He can use them as medium and follow a similar strategy he did with Kidomaru's arrow:

Bone forrest have been reacted by part 1 Lee and Gaara, Neji can pull off a similar feat, he has byakugan and can see their formation from underground. Forrest is not too dense, the gaps between bone branches can allow someone to be in between them unharmed:

the chakra web string and the bone are different, he can't infuse his chakra into such dense material and he does not have time for that anyway

@Caterpillar: Couldn't one argue that Neji was only able to transfer his chakra through the webs because of the fact there was a chakra tunnel (In a way) in the center, that allowed for Neji's chakra to move through? Any bone connected to Kimimaro will be filled with bone marrow and not be hollow to the point of allowing Neji's chakra to transfer through it.

1st: I did not made that avy.
2nd: Bones are organic materials. Gentle fist can go through human flesh despite the fact that flesh does not involve chakra and made for detroying

he uses chakra to control where and how he grows the bones. however, the bones themselves are not naturally chakra resistant. otherwise you could use your limbs to block gentle fist blows instead of redirecting them or avoiding it altogether
