Eh, if you want to talk about power levels...
Gaara was battling Kimimaro, who took on the Sound 4 by himself with ease. That alone probably says how Kishi thinks of Gaara compared to one of the weaker of the Sound 4 (even though some can argue he's the strongest). You remember how Rock Lee without weights was owning Gaara? Kankuro still believed that Gaara would win for "being a genius". Even though genius is a pretty loose term in Naruto(Rock Lee being the genius of hard work), it's a good title to have.
If you wanna get to the actual fight though, Gaara has a lot that he could use...
His sand pressured Kimimaro, who most likely out sped the Sound 4 to beat them (along with taijutsu and his KG). This alone might get him, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt since he's displayed pretty amazing evasive feats by using the trees in the forest to swing about. He dodged the Sasuke Retrieval Squad's attacks countless times in concession. Gaara is versatile though, the longer this fight goes, the more sand he can make to prepare for the big attacks.
Gaara can sense with his sand, so it wouldn't be too hard a task to find Kidomaru if that's his only goal. He did the same when trying to find the Mizukage's clam in Part 2. For Kidomaru's side, he likes using projectiles at peoples' blind spots specifically, using a giant spider to aide him, and his special bow and arrow when things get serious. The first two should be easily taken care of, his defense is better than Neji's in that it has no blind spot; it just keeps blocking him passively. The third might be a problem, but he'll have to hit him on the first go. Gaara will put himself in a dome if he feels threatened. I actually think it won't go that far, because his third eye will be scouting the area while the sand defends him.
