Genkai has traveled far across the land following a trail of stale beer and cheap cigars in search of the legendary taijutsu master known as Crutch Kaguya. After putting a smack down on several fodder her travels bring her to the base of Mount Big Earth. After climbing stairs for a month she ends up at the top of the mountain. Their is a large dojo with a sign on the front of it that says "Be back shortly". Genkai sits and mediates next to a well in front of the dojo. Another person arrives shortly after. Genkai looks at the person and says,

Are you Crutch Kaguya?

Having been there months before while on his journey across the land, Shisui is happy to find that he has company atop the quiet recesses of the mountain peak. He stands up, dusts himself off, smiles, and makes a bow before the beautiful maiden.

"Ohaiyo gozaimasu. My name is Shisui."

As he lifts his head once more, Shisui feels an uneasiness in the air. His look changes to that of concern and anger. Shin speaks in an authoritative tone.

"Who's there?"

Taijutsu, literally meaning Body Skill, is a basic form of techniques and refers to any techniques that involve martial arts or the optimization of natural human abilities. Taijutsu can be split into two general categories: techniques that require chakra and those that do not require chakra. Techniques that require chakra are utilized by special bio abilities that enhance the physical features or motions of the body, examples are Gentle Fist and Dead Bone Pulse. There are also other techniques that simply use pure chakra to enhance physical capabilities. The training of these techniques is to be handled by specialists of those bios, and this training does not pertain to those skills. This training is focused on the Strong Fist aspect of taijutsu. Taijutsu is executed by accessing both the physical and mental energies within the body, and relying on the stamina and strength gained through training. Strong Fist taijutsu does not require chakra. Taijutsu also does not require hand seals to perform, but does take advantage of certain stances or poses, and is much quicker to use than Ninjutsu or Genjutsu.

The above is the "textbook" definition of taijutsu that I gathered into one source. Read it, and tell me what is wrong with the "textbook" definition, and tell me what is right about the "textbook" definition. After you do that, tell me your own personal definition of taijutsu that does not view taijutsu in the same manner as the generic overview above, but your own personal recollections.

I will do my best to draw on my limited experience. I'm but a novice after all.

I don't not think that anything you stated was incorrect. The definition you gave for taijutsu is good in the sense that, it relays the fact that taijutsu is a fighting form that uses natural human abilities,i.e. the body. You have clearly described two main forms of taijutsu as those requiring and not requiring chakra. I think the flaw in your definition is the interpretation of the phrase "optimization of natural human abilities". The phrase itself is correct but can be interpenetrated in a multitude of ways. With several different ways to use the body I'm not sure that all taijutsu forms can be encompassed in a single definition.

Taijutsu in my own words is any fighting style that utilizes the physical nature of the human body. This utilization is mainly achieved through physical contact with another person which is what we are here to learn about.

To be honest beyond this I'm not sure really sure how to define taijutsu.

Would you mind telling Deviation to reply, or I can just drop him and continue the training solo since you allowed him to join? It's up to you.

OOC: Sorry about the late reply but senseis usually take forever to reply so thought i had more time. -.-

I do not see anything wrong with your compiled definition other than three things: (1) the fact that it is basically hand-to-hand combat, (2) some techniques do require chakra even the non-special bio ones but it is only a few, and (3) you forgot to mention the two styles of strong fist which is external and hard.

In my opinion, taijutsu is learning to use your body as an extension of yourself to overcome your opponent. You combine every fiber of your being to close the gap between you and your enemy and avoid a certain death. From what I learned in Naruto, it also a way to gauge your enemy, such as his intentions and his heart. Naruto did so with Sasuke and Kirabi did the same with Ay. By giving your all you not only show the strength of your body but the strength of your soul. My version is not conventional but it isn't uncommon either.

Tell me why you think that "optimization of human abilities" can be interpreted in different ways. When I think of this phrase, I first think of Dead Bone Pulse. Since I used it in the past, and because my experience using that specific ability, my interpretation will be different from yours. When I think of that phrase, I simply think of taijutsu as anything that allows you to use your actual body to fight. Now, this conflicts what you said Deviation, you said that taijutsu is basically hand-to-hand combat, now did you mean to say to think that is what you believe taijutsu is or if that is what you receive from the compiled definition. Because I made sure to not have those words in it. Taijutsu is not just hand-to-hand combat, it's basically anything that allows you to use your body, or your actual physical body. Also, I was a bit confused when you said "use your body as an extension of yourself." Your body is you. xD It's not an extension.

That aspect that taijutsu has more depth between fighters is true, like the examples you stated from the manga, and even some battles on the site. Discuss what you think your personal style is. By the way guys, this is a group training session, you can respond to each other's posts, perhaps a once or twice times, but don't just spam while I'm gone. This is more about the spread of taijutsu ideas before we focus in an overarching manner on the techs.

When I said that "optimization of human abilities" can be interpreted in different ways, the first thing I was thinking about is fighting styles and the parts of the human body they incorporate. For example some fighting styles just focus on leg attacks while others focus more on punches. Most taijutsu is a combination of the two. I agree that this optimization would also includes Dead Bone Pulse and other manipulations of the human body structure. The second thing about optimization is whether the fighting style focuses on raw power, speed, or a combination of the two. A person that focuses on raw power is going to have a bigger build than someone that focuses on speed techniques. I thought that phrase while being general was too vague to give a good sense about taijutsu since most people would probably focus on one fighting style to define how human abilities are optimized.

As a personal style I would like techniques that focus more on speed than power. The style would incorporate use of the arms and legs and not solely focus on one or the other. Beyond that I'm pretty open to different taijutsu forms and I'll have to experience different styles before having a more defined personal style.

The hand to hand part, sensei, I meant that is mostly what I believe it is about. But by your reply about it being about ways to utilize your body as a weapon help broaden my narrow view. I take a spiritual view on most things in life so that is what I meant with the body being an extension of the self. I see ones abilities as separate entities. The mind is one, the body another, and the spirit yet another. When working in conjunction they become an extension to another part In other words the Mind can help the body, the body to the mind, and the spirit to the other two. It may seem confusing to you but to me it makes perfect sense.

I have yet to discover my personal style so I can't really comment on that. There are many styles that have yet to be experimented and developed. I am looking for a more defensive fighting style than attack. When one has something they want to protect they become strong and there is nothing they can'd do. But it all takes determination and willpower.

Fair enough to you both.
What are some things that are important to focus on when using taijutsu in the RP?

I think the most important thing to focus on is detail. No matter what type of fighting style is used the description of it's techniques should be detailed. Also how that technique is used should be detailed. For example saying "I punch you with my right arm" is not descriptive. You need to specify where you hit, your stance when making a hit, the angle at which you hit, and the distance at which you hit to name a few things. Another important aspect of using taijutsu is a basic understanding of how the techniques your using are going to interact with what an opponent is doing. Fighting styles are often pitted against each other and it's important to to understand when a specific style is going to govern. The other aspect of interactions is understanding how taijutsu reacts to ninjutsu and genjutsu techniques. I think if these things are defined in detail then taijutsu can be properly used in RP.

Awareness

In taijutsu, being aware of yourself, your enemy, and your surroundings will prove to be a valuable asset in battle. Especially knowing one's limits and what is feasible is important in being effective and efficient. Some enemies are not confident in close-range combat and if they are engaged will have less skill and efficiency compared to someone who is proficient in it. Also, keeping in mind any weaknesses like bruises or handicaps (fractures, sprains, or strains) and exploiting them to your advantage using taijutsu.

Alright good points both of you. Now I would like you both to emphasize those points. Perception describe how you would attack Deviation, and Deviation use your awareness of your surroundings to counter it. Consider this to be the hospital rooftop where Sasuke and Naruto fought.

Genkai stares across the rooftop at Shisui. They are 5 m apart from each other. Genkai stands at 4'-3" so she is substantially shorter than Shisui.

Prepare yourself Shisui!

A white sheet is blown away by the wind and Genkai takes off running towards Shisui. She quickly reaches closes the gap. She comes within 0.75 m of Shisui. Still in motion with her left foot in front of her right, Genkai lifts her right leg off the ground while pivoting about her left foot. With her right leg in the air she swings it at Shisui's left thigh landing a kick using her angular momentum. The swinging motion is downward and from Genkai's right to left. As Genkai is kicking Shisui she places her arms in front of her face in a boxing position to defend from an oncoming punch. After kicking Shisui Genkai places her right foot back on the ground and waits to react to Shisui's counterattack.

Sorry if this isn't the best description. I'm trying to describe a lower kick aimed at Shisui's right thigh.

OOC: I was in bed analyzing your move and was going to tell you were metagaming when you wrote what I was doing. Then I logged on to talk to you about that and see you changed it so I am glad. ^__^

These are my notes so pay no attention to them >.>

โ™ฆ Genkai runs while in ????-range
โ™ฆ Genkai is in short distance to Shisui and kicks downward from right to left from her view
โ™ฆ Genkai blocks face using boxing stance
โ™ฆ Genkai awaits attack

As Genkai rushed towards him, Shisui noticed that the sheet was hanging on a wire quite close to him. He grabs onto the wire and lifts himself enough to allow Genkai's kick to pass underneath him. While still hanging and while Genkai is blocking his face with his fists, Shisui utilizes the momentum of the wire, bends his legs a little and kicks Genkai's fists with both feet which then essentially should hit him in the face with his own fists. The impact from his kick should help catch him off guard and push him either back or on the ground. Shisui then lets go of the wire above him and gets into a ready stance waiting for Genkai's next move.

"Next time be more careful, Genkai! I could have gotten hurt!" T__T

Now that one of you has attacked and the other has defended I'd like for you both to do something that may seem strange. Tell me why you choose those specific actions? Essentially what was your gain from those actions?

I chose to perform a basic kick since it is one of the simplest moves in taijutsu. Fighting styles and tendencies of a person are gradually revealed the longer a battle progresses. I elected to use a simple move with no complicated positions that I could quickly and easily back out of if needed. At the same time I can start to access Shisui's fighting style through his reactions. In this case I learned that Shisui is very adapt at using his surroundings to his advantage and he might be more partial to evasion than pure defense. Also he uses an opponent's reaction to his advantage.

Another reason I chose to perform a kick is it's one of the few moves I know.

I is clever. Hee hee. :snick:

He didn't specify where the cloth came from so I used that to my advantage. I deduced that the cloth had been hanging from somewhere since it is laundry. A lot of times during battles people tend to forget their surroundings and underestimate their opponents. Zero Kelvin once taught me that even the most powerful of foes can be taken down with the right strategy and using their mistakes as an advantage. I grabbed the wire and lifted myself because I didn't want to fall and since he went straight for defending I kicked him in the face and pushed him back. I try to visualize as best I can what my opponent is doing and apply my logic using cause and effect. What I gained from my moves was avoiding damage and still maintaining my ground (not being put into a defensive position).

Perception performed a simple move there is nothing much to say (though I have only read after the edit).

I would say your final counter had some god-modding in it as well. First of all, this is a wire that is meant to hang clothes. Sensibly, a grown individual should not be able to pull his entire body up into the air then momentarily hold his body in the air using a flimsy wire as support. Its more likely the wire will break and you'll just fall. If it was some sort of steel cable used to hold up bridges that would be a different case. I just personally felt using a laundry wire/rope/string for that action seemed unrealistic. But if say your replaced it with a bar or something, then the rest of the move is fine.

Now switch roles. Deviation you attack, and Perception will defend.

Standing at mid-range from Genkai, Bon can feel the cool breeze sweep by his face as he takes a deep breath. He looks around sees the silver-looking, chained fence surrounding them with some barb wire at the top. He looks at the beige floor beneath them, does a circle with his feet on it, and can hear the little dust on them. It seems it had been a while since there was a dust storm in Konoha. Bon then looks towards the distance and sees Genkai. He thinks to himself, "I wonder if he is as nervous as I am." Bon looks up and can feel the bright sun shining. It was soon to be summer and the heat could be felt. Bon takes another deep breath and closes his eyes as he brings his right fist to his face. He clenches it and the his facial expression turns into an angry one. He yells out to Genkai as he opens his eyes.

"You can't intimidate me woman! I won't let your get in the way of my dreams!"

Bon makes a handsign and channels some chakra to his feet. As he sprints forward towards genkai, the chakra boosts his running speed by a little. As he approaches Genkai up close, Bon puts out his left foot on the ground to slow himself and pushes him a little to the right. As he is shoulder to shoulder with Genkai, he pivots to his left while only on his left foot. His right leg, using the momentum of the spin, closes in towards Genkai's back hoping to hit him in the back and pushing him forward.
