Wasn't that with the help of Gremmy? IIRC I thought Gremmy lost cause he believed kenpachi to be an unbeatable monster, so because of that he was stronger then he really was.

His bankai will probaly be like Ichigo, but instead of speed, it will be raw power, so, maybe as strong as Genryusay's or more, if he achieves bankai that is, which I think he won't, we only saw he activate shikai, maybe it has another power.
Him having bankai would also take part of his swag;

How can someone achieve Bankai while in battle? It's impossible. Also, Ichigo's Bankai doesn't only give him immense speed but raw power as well. All that fighting power is condensed which is why it gives him maximum fighting ability as Byakuya stated.

Kenpachi isn't the strongest shinigami, the title itself is a bit overrated. When Unohana was Kenpachi, Yamamoto was still stronger than her. Also, the only person stronger than Haschwalth is Juha lmao and i really don't see Juha wasting his time on Zaraki. Kenpachi superior to Kyoraku? Nope. The only reason why Kyoraku decided to get Kenpachi to train was because the Gotei 13 needed all the help that they could get. And Kenpachi is a valuable asset.

His zanpacto has been trying to talk to him for awhile so it would not be surprising if his zan thought he was worthy of its bankai name.

Kyoraku at the moment would need bankai to beat zaraki so if zaraki get bankai he will be stronger than kyoraku...even c46 knew he would be unstoppable if he became as strong as his old self again.
