Don't get confused with Kenpachi's personality and his actual strength before learning his training with Unohana.

Kenpachi is strong that's no doubt but a lot of people make the same mistake in thinking he's invincible due to how he acts and because of how biased they can get due to liking his character a lot.

Fact is Mask was able to beat 2 captain level Shinigami and a number of Lieutenants before being defeated by Renji is the most un charismatic fight ever. Kenpachi before his training would not have been able to do that purely due to how Kenpachi fights and his strength at said time.

Kenpachi before his training was always shown to be rivaling Byakuya take the fight with the espada the two had and how they were constantly ready to fight one another and I really doubt Pre Royal Realm Byakuya could have taken Mask.

I'm not necessarily saying your doing it however the reason most people say Kenpachi can low to mid diff anyone is due to how much they like his badass style and feeling-less attitude in battle but he does have limits and if he had battled Mask before his training he would have ended exactly like he did against fake Juhabach.

When I say I counting how strong Kenpachi might become is not necessary, I don't mean pre-Unohana training, I just don't count the Bankai that he might or might not get. But sure even if you don't count Bankai he has gotten stronger by Unohana training, but it is worth to note that he was incredibly powerful already, it wasn't just cause of how he acted.

Just look at the amount of damage he caused when he finally used both hands. That alone should prove that he is far beyond most other characters. But even without that he's still incredibly strong cause of how he never really dies. Just look at his fight with Ichigo or Nnoitora, he received injuries that would kill most other people, but he just kept fighting.

Mask in Vollstandig is obviously very strong and fast proven by how he took on the new Shikai (Who low diff him before his vollstandig) without any major trouble. But that alone only proves that he's stronger than most captain, but so is Kenpachi. But looking at feats Kenpachi has more of them and more impressive ones, so I'd say he definitely stands the best chance in this fight even without whatever power he may receive.
