Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

Kenjutsu also known as "Sword Techniques" relates to the swordplay utilized by both Shinobi and Samurai. Samurai such as Mifune, and Shinobi such as the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist are known practitioner in Kenjutsu. It can be combine with Ninjutsu, Genjutsu, Chakra Flow, etc to achieve more devastating techniques.

To be honest, this is all I know, I am not to familiar with Kenjutsu. Some of it was help from Narutopedia to jog my memory.

We can use the Bokken (Wood Sword) as it is commonly use for training.

You mistake my intentions, we shall use wooden swords indeed, but my question was what type of sword do you favor.
Are you a user of longswords, rapiers, katana, scimitars perhaps?
Swords can come in almost any shape and size from the traditional Katana of Mifune, to the strange swords of the seven swordsman of the mist.
Kenjutsu is an art form like none other, all you need to do is pick your brush and we may begin in earnest my friend.

Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

Trick questions?... I see what you did there. xd It would be every sword, would it not? I am mastering the sword or becoming a specialist in the sword. You are correct. The sword can be any shape, size, (etc) because it is how it is being used in combat which makes it different. Also, about the brush and how the swords relates to art - such as music, painting, chess, and calligraphy) - It determines the warrior capabilities in combat and responsibilities.

Kidding. >_> Chinese Movies. :p

I would be favoring the Katana blade.

Excellent, the Katana a wise choice.
Also nobody masters the sword fully, you never stop learning when it comes to freeform.
Now you can begin by telling me the differences you see when using a Katana with one hand to attack, or two hands to attack.
Explain every difference you can see.

Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

The difference between using a Katana with One-hand/Two-hand, and how its advantages and disadvantages of both types depends on how the weapons is used.

One-handed, also known as single-handed, grip on the hilt of the blade when being swung exhibit less strength to fatal harm and less focus for more flexibility. It is aimlessly being swung representing the wielder of the blade carelessness and showing of emotions: anger and frustration. This can be exploited for the target to find an opening for an attack. Thus, it leaves you wide open. However, it can be said to be gaining ground for tactical use.

Aside from its weak points, it strong points are what make it usage formidable in tactical combat. From overwhelming your opponent to fathering a distance between yourselves, shows it has other usage when in more experienced hands.

Two-handed, also known as dual-handed, grip on the hilt of the blade when being swung, has more power and focus when attacking the target - a precise clean cut as you would say. It represents "strength and confidence" and when oppose by another true swordsman, a recognition of your "will" (i.e soul) is seen through your sword when it is being held. It is said to be difficult to battle against and to break your sword with strength alone is not easy. However, your "will" determines your ability to fight and to withstand the brute strength of any blade.

OK. I made some stuff up. >_>

Close enough, but when using one handed strikes the largest benefit is your free hand.
It allows you to attack in very creative ways, using a mix between tai and kenjutsu.

Ok now explain to me all the differences and benefits you can see between a traditional grip and a reversed grip stance.

Know little of the Traditional Grip, but I assume its usage were of the basic attacks and offensives. Reversed Grip usage is tactical. Commonly involves maneuvering the blade to cope with varies environments or situations.

Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

Reverse grip is more useful in terms of blocking from experience, also it catches most opponents off guard, when using reversed grip to block, you will be just as effective with a one handed style, if you allow your wrist to bend to your arm and use your full arm and the blade to absorb the shock of an attack.
You can see this when Mifune tries to attack Sasuke with a two handed attack at the kage summit, and Sasuke blocks it one handed using a reverse grip.
So if you favor using one hand then i would suggest learning a reverse grip.
Which brings me to my next question, which style suits you?

Good okay. Now for some practice swings.
Using your Bokken, move over to the wooden training dummy over yonder.
Take some swings at it, be varied and show me your descriptive skill with each slash.
Begin.

Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

I elegantly angle my bokken in a reversed grip, positioning to my side. The bokken facing out horizontally behind me and is ‘levered’ by the left hand, arcing out with the cut making contact with the dummy and cutting through the other side. A mighty swing and the dummy was cut from the mid-section, turn to halve, if a human body.

Re: [Kenjutsu] - Kichiro Fujimoto

Good, okay lets do some more practice swings, but try to be more creative. You're a ninja not a samurai and reversed grip gives you the ability to use agility.
Attack from multiple angles and move around the dummies.

*Summons a row of ten dummies*

I feel indifferent about Kenjutsu. I don't think I can be "one with the sword" and I don't see it as a extension of myself. I just see it as a tool used to stab/slash and in some cases, used as an accessory.

I thought Kenjutsu was swordplay, but I was told it was more of an art. Again, that is all I know.

Well then now then we will start with the first part of training, Offense. There are many style of swords play that exists in the world. Each having its own principals and structure to others but they all relate that they use swords. We will start with stances. In the roleplay, most people who dont really excel in kenjutsu doesnt use stances as they see it as an unfit habit but as sword user, I find it useful strictly in freeform that my stance is made known. Now pick a style of kenjutsu if you know any, and show me a stance you think would work in combat. If your stuck I recommend looking into Kendo.
