What is a Kekkei Genkai? What is its relation to nature affinities? There seems to be many differing interpretations of what a KKG is and how it works around the forums and I thought we should clarify it here once and for all.

Here's an excerpt from Narutowikia:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Kekkei genkai (血継限界; Literally meaning "a technique limited to inheritance by blood" or "Bloodline Limit") are abilities passed down genetically within specific clans. It's possible for a ninja to have more than one of these abilities. Kekkei genkai abilities that work via the user's eye are called dōjutsu.

Other kekkei genkai include mixing one type of elemental chakra with another, creating a new one unique to the users, which is usually impossible for normal ninja. Kekkei genkai and their related techniques cannot be taught to or copied by others. However, kekkei genkai can be given to others. Dōjutsu, or other kekkei genkai isolated to a single organ, can be transplanted into the body of another, as was done with transferring Obito's Sharingan to Kakashi.
"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I know, a KKG is a genetically inherited ability of sorts that allows you to use an advanced/combined nature element (Lava, vapour, wood, ice, etc). Hence, having multiple affinities (like Hiruzen or Kakashi) does not automatically mean that you have a KKG; rather having a KKG means that you necessarily would have multiple affinities.

PS: This is in response to some NBers arguments that Mei Terumi has 2 KKGs because of her multiple affinities. I believe that the reverse is true instead; ie, she has multiple affinities precisely because she was born with 2 KKGs

Any thoughts/objections/insights?

I like it, never really thought of it that way.

I just assumed that this was a well-stated, and well-known fact. I've never seen anyone argue the contrary.

Thanks for putting it up, though. If it prevents even 1 unnecessary, incorrect post, then you deserve a metal.

Uh, another thing

There's also kekkei tōta, take Mu or onoki's jinton(dust release) for example, it is a combination of earth, fire and wind
The Kekkei Tota is gonna further complicate matters. I think it deserves another thread on its own! You see, if a Kekkei Tota is simply a more advanced form of a KKG, then how come it can be taught to Onoki? Shouldn't it be only acquired strictly through genetic inheritance?
