On 09/20/2016, Tuesday, a 43 yr old man by the name of Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed by police in a parking lot near an apartment complex. Both Keith Scott and the officer who shot him, Brentley Vinson, were black, but the shooting created mass hysteria within the Black Lives Matter movement regardless.
According to the report "Charlotte police originally went to the complex at approximately 4pm, looking for a suspect with an outstanding warrant. Scott was not the suspect, but was observed getting out of his vehicle with a gun, before reentering the vehicle moments later. Officers approached the vehicle and Scott once again exited with the weapon in hand. After repeated orders by Police to drop his firearm, Scott was shot and killed".
After the shooting, when questioned about the situation, Scott's family members and neighbors claimed that he only had a book while he was in the car, which is does not match up with the recovered firearm from the scene of the shooting. No books were found on-site. Local protests quickly began and it did not take long for the “peaceful” protests to turn into violent riots.

And what is a riot without looting? Several local business were damaged and ransacked during the riots. Rioters marched in the streets blocking several main road ways, and the interstate I-85 while damaging cars and public property by throwing rocks. Gov. McCrory declared a state of emergency in Charlotte and called in the National Guard after Charlotte's police chief said he needed the help.
