I don't think he can, puppet masters are not faring off well against close range fighters (have been said multiple times), both Lee and Neji are fast enough to bypass puppets and strike Kankuro.
Neji has a decent potential of victory against Kakuzu. His threads contain chakra and Neji can channel his chakra through them thus kill his hearts (which consists of threads)

Must be the worst gauntlet thread i've ever seen. Implying Danzo is as strong as strong as 8, 7, 6, 5... Puppet masters lose to 8, 7, 5.

@Caterpillar, how does either Lee or Neji have a chance against the Sandaime Kazekage? A puppet master may be weak in close combat but Kankuro is a long ranged fighter whose puppets make it hard for CQC specialists to get close. Not to mention Kakuzu can multitask with his masks and protect Kankuro's blind spots.
