If I am not mistaken he was a Jonin, and therefore these guys had no right telling him not to get involved. In fact he could have probably told those guys to piss off and proceed to help defend the village...So what gives?

If I didn't want him to die then he wouldn't be a ninja. It makes no sense for them not to get involved when they are likely to get killed the next day on a mission

I'm only saying that they didn't have the authority to do that, maybe Kurenhai's dad with kurenhai. But Kakashi was practically an adult and didn't have any parents forcing him out of the fight
