He passes out immediately after getting it, he might not have know he activated it or how to activate it after that. He was still very young with little knowledge of it as well, since it was so rare.

I dont think its a lack of the authors not thinking that far ahead due to the fact that itachi had Mangekyou Sharigan in regular naruto after he killed the Uchia clan this was way before Kakashi had a chance to use his Sharigan against Zabuza

First off Kakashi didnt use it because he hadnt activated it, he didnt have enough stamina like the uchihas or naruto. Also Sasuke did not gain the sharingan when his clan was slaughtered, it was when they fought zabuza. He gained mangekyou when he killed itachi, after realizing he wasnt the douchbag he turned out to be.

You've got to remember the fact that he is Non-Uchiha and can not tolerate the draining effects of MS during combat.
