You have to train your body to unlock the other gates. I don't think it's something you can just copy.

No, not at all.
Kakashi's sunshin feats of reaching Kaguya are good enough to say he can put pressure on Gai with his speed alone. Not to mention, Gai would have to deal with PS (fast enough to dodge Kaguya's arms which were claimed to be too damn fast by Naruto who is the fastest character of the manga).
Gai lacks the knowledge of Kakashi's intangibility, so if Kakashi goes for a CQC strike and Gai gets overconfident, Kakashi completely trolls him.
If Gai stops moving for a single second, he gets a kamui snipe.
