Kakashi low to mid difficulty. It was already shown that Chidori>Gaara's sand and even if Gaara's sand somehow got harder during the time skip (of which there is no evidence, by the way), Kakashi has something much more powerful than Chidori: Raikiri.

So as for sand defense, it's not any big deal.
Considering the location, Gaara won't be able to do awesomely much with his sand, either.

Kakashi is faster and can overcome Gaara's defense and basically this alone gives him a win. Add to this Kamui and his other techniques and Kakashi should take this low diff, mid if he's having a bad day.

If they fought on the desert, then Kakashi could win this high diff only and Gaara would stand chances. But in Forest of Death? Overkill.

Please explain to me how Kakashi defeats Gaara in the desert. I think you're underestimating what Gaara can do with an unlimited amount of sand.
