What if we get some cheese. What if Kakashi is able to unlock the EMS with the dual Kamui sharingan? Think about it. Kakashi and Obito have essentially been like brothers. Both wielding 1/2 of Obito's Sharingan power up to this point. Notice the way Tobirama puts it in this scan:
Tobirama says, "Special Chakra sprouts inside their brains, which affects the optic nerve, and produces a change in their eyes."
That's all fine and dandy, but think about Kakashi's situation. He didn't gain the ability to use his MS until Part 2, while Obito had his activated since Rin died. Maybe Kishi finally going to fill in this plot hole; the one he only glazed over by saying Kakashi 'trained' his eye.
Now some might argue that Kakashi lacks this special chakra from the uchiha, and thus can not unlock any version that Obito himself has not unlocked. Here is where I call BS. Based off of Tobirama's vast knowledge of the sharingan and what he says, notice he says the special chakra affects the optic nerve, which changes their eye into a sharingan. Still lost?
Kakashi isn't an Uchiha, yet can change his sharingan at will.
Hold that thought while we go a bit deeper.
Now we know, when Obito unlocked his MS, Kakashi did simultaneously. My question is how? Some people believe, Kakashi received the powerup because Obito received it. Others believe Kakashi received the MS because he killed Rin, but passed out before realization. While Obito received it because he watched his friend kill Rin.

Now after the reading the above, you understand why it's imperative for Kakashi to have this special chakra, despite being an Uchiha. Without the chakra, the progression of his sharingan to MS at any time would have been useless. This is why I believe that after Obito has obtained both sharingan, and the inevitable happens when Kakashi gets inherited both of the sharingan, he will unlock the EMS. We know how loosely Kishi throws DNA around, so I believe it's entirely plausible that the special chakra within Kakashi will meld with the special chakra from Obito's eyes, and create the EMS.
If you think about it, Kakashi merely getting both MS sharingan would not be beneficial at all for him. He has shitty chakra reserves already considering he's not an Uchiha. Based on the amount of chakra it took Obito to utilize both sharingan at once, I think the benefits of EMS would suit Kakashi the best in this situation. Over being useless, or simply out of chakra and useless.
Thanks for reading. I'm not asking anyone to agree with me, this is just a belief I felt like sharing. It's very possible that the eyes will just be destroyed. However, I believe Kishi would not have wasted the panels he did on Kakashi realizing how

If we go by the logic of the latter argument, we can assume that after obtaining the base 3T sharingan, the user of the sharingan has the special chakra required to allow the sharingan to proceed throughout its stages.
If you don't want to accept this fact, then we'll go by the logic of the former's argument. Kakashi's sharingan progressed to the next stage merely because Obito's did. Then one has to wonder; doesn't that mean when Obito's sharingan is deactivated, Kakashi's is as well? When Obito's is activated, then Kakashi's is as well? Yet we find that Kakashi can activate his MS at will, without disrupting Obito's, and Obito vice versa. Meaning, one of two things. Kakashi has the special chakra required to activate/deactivate his sharingan(obviously to the constraint set by Kishi to limit his chakra reserves), or Kakashi just focuses real hard and magically his sharingan turns to an MS .
