Guy will win unless kakashi has developed some innovative was to counter off the 8 gates ...but mainly i consider them to be equal this is a very hard question

Its in the First Naruto Series before Shippuden we see Kakashi one handed Rock climb and he opens the 1st gate, this is just before the pre-lim Chunnin exams in the 1st Naruto.

Kakashi can open at least one gate, as shown during Kakashi's one-handed rock climbing where a shot of his brain shows the relevant point activating, as well as in his usage of the Front Lotus. Narutopedia

True, but he has to have the body to fully use it. Gai specializes in taijutsu, while kakashi specializes in ninjutsu. While I'm sure kakashi is ok at taijutsu, he's not to the level of Gai. The eight gates are chakra blockers in the body to stop a person from overusing their chakra and dieing. So yea nice try.

I'ma go with Kakashi. Gai's taijutsu is off the charts but Kakashi is far superior in ninjutsu, is much smarter, and is no sap when it comes to taijutsu either. Also, based on reputation alone. Kakashi was made a general in the joint shinobi army, I don't believe Gai was, but correct me if I'm wrong. People also recognize Kakashi and the strongest bad guys are always keen about getting rid of Kakashi before he can do them any more damage in the future. I don't see anyone giving Gai this attention so there must be a reason.
they are 'rivals' but that's just a thing Gai started and I think it's shown that Kakashi doesn't really care about the competitions; he just goes along with it. So I'ma go with Kakashi.
