He wasn't that smart tho, he just looked like one. Obito was almost always right and so Kakashi realized he was acting wrongly deciding later to go for back up Obito. He regretted of what he has done(stupid things), I wouldn't say he was smart back to that time.

If Obito was alive I think he would be a genius too.
