Because kishi drew him with a mask always on as an adult, so when he drew him as a kid he needed a mask as well

Kishi meant Kakashi's looks as a way to represent the popular imagery of ninjas wearing masks.

He failed a mission that was dire to konoha

Well, big deal.I bet my bottom bi*** that he is not the only person who failed. Not everyone is a perfectionist.Even if it was a dire mission, someone else could accomplish it,right?

His dad saved his comrades instead of finishing the mission. And was shunned and eventually killed himself. Kakashi was still a kid but was a shinobi when he committed suicide.

I believe that once Kishi realized that Kakashi was popular he kept it on for the fandom.

You have to realize kishi drew kakashi as an adult than a kid so by the time he got to the time of him being a kid Kakashi was top 5 popular characters.

Its all about the look of a key character that people ask about.
