Well he almost won with the help of Choji and Choza and a few who were disposed of almost instantly.

And that was without Kamui though if he would've used Kamui then and there, he might be defenseless against the rest if he runs out of chakra. Though Naruto wouldn't have had that much trouble with Deva Path if Kakashi would've used it on him on the spot. Besides, it's better to die having used Kamui on Deva Path than having used it on the nail.

But I guess that's just the way the plot played out.
