They are equals for different reasons, but latest chapter confirmed 2 things some Kakashi fanboys denied:
-8 gates Gai is above Kakashi.
-Kakashi acknowledges Gai as his rival.

The fight between two can go eithr way depending on conditions, intel, mindset, objectives etc. Fact is, an "actual" fight between 2 would never happen as they are comrades.

kakashi aint sniping sh*t with his practically blind eye.. in fact he wont even be able to keep track of guys 7th gate speed anymore.. heck.. he probs cant keep up with 5 gates speed considering he needed that eye to keep a track on rock lee against gaara..

kakashi at this point needs to be pretty much 5 feat from the opponent to even perform kamui accurately on them...

Kakashi without Narutos added chakra can only use Kamui around three times before passing out.

7 Gates Gai is more powerful based off of his own abilities.

If kakashi did not have obitos sharingan (meaning based on kakashis Natural abilities vs Gais Natural abilities) Kakashi is no way in Gais level, although kakashi is obviously still a good shinobi.

Kakashi doesn't have to fight the 8th gate, he simply has to outlast gai at that point since he turned on the "death timer".
