Kaede: Her original personality is that of a withdrawn and somewhat depressed teenager due to her being bullied because of her horns. This situation also led to her devepoping a self-hatred and extremely low self esteem. Although she can still develop relationships and intimacy with certain people given the time to accept them, once she is around people she trusts she becomes a far more approachable girl and can be seen as very sweet, shy and kind hearted.
Lucy: In this persona she possesses a very deep hatred for humans and can kill whole families without any sign of regret or remorse. She often hears voices in her head and can become very cold and sadistic when the voices are speaking, they tell her that she has no place in the world and that it is impossible for her to co-exist with humans, this led to her killing many. She killed some by inducing heart attacks and others by spreading her genes to male humans who would then have children who in turn would murder their parents. She is Sociapathic, sadistic and blood thirsty.
Nyu: Seen in the picture to the right of this section. In this persona she loses the ability to talk and can only make the sound 'Nyu' hence the name. She only has a basic knowledge of good and evil as well as very basic understanding of human morale's and society. She is a kind, innocent and sweet natured girl with an intense sexual curiosity which can lead to some very awkward situations. Overall this persona is that of a care free, child like girl without a real understanding of life.

Kaede's mother was a human whom was capable of giving birth to fully powered and reproductive-capable Diclonii and was seen as the true origin of the virus. Her mother was taken at a young age by scientists and was experimentd on and forced to bear a son for them to experiment on also, her mother then commited suicide shortly after. Due to this Kaede was forced to live her childhood in an orphanage and believed that her parents had abandoned her not knowing of the true reason for her living status. In her orphanage she was avoided by staff and was the subject of intense bullying from the other children who stayed there due to her having horns.
Development of 'Lucy' persona
Whilst wandering in the forest outside of her orphanage a still young Kaede came across a small abandoned puppy and decided to keep it in secret, this puppy soon became her first true friend. One of the girls in the orphanage found out about the puppy however and told the boys about it. The boys then snuck out and took the puppy from the woods before bringing it to Kaede holding her down and smashing it repeatedly with a blunt object, killing it in front of her. The girl whom had told the boys about the puppy then entered and despite all of her apologizing and insisting that she didn't know the puppy would be hurt Kaede saw through her apologetic eyes and saw her smiling inside. Feeling betrayed and enraged she unleashed her vectors for the first time killing all of her tormentors. She then buried the dog and apologized for not being able to protect it. She then went on the run, at nights she would switch over to her Lucy persona and allow herself to slaughter entire families in order to stay in their houses for a while, moving between houses when she ran out of supplies.
Kouta
Whilst standing at the grave of her puppy one day a young boy approached her seeing her horns, assuming that he would just add to her hurt she prepared to kill him. The boy however was not there to hurt her, he found the horns cool and immediately wanted to befriend her. Not trusting him, Kaede tried to leave to avoid further disappointment but the boy persisted in trying to befriend her and arranged that they meet the next day at the same time. True to his word they met again the next day and he handed her a hat to cover her horns with. Again they arranged to meet the next day, he decided to take Kaede to the zoo and she instantly gained a love and interest in the animals, most of which she had never seen before. This became the greatest day of Kaede's life. Kouta however was leaving the next day and moving to a new house, fearing that this was the last day she would ever see Kouta she found out that he was going to a festival that night and begged that he let her come with him but he said she couldn't because he promised he would go with his cousin. She decided to go anyway on her own and followed Kouta to the festival. Upon arrival at the festival she found at that Kouta's cousin was a girl she became jealous and wanted to be Kouta's only female friend. Seeing Kouta with his cousin sparked of the Lucy persona again, the voices in her head associated with this persona began projecting images of Kouta in her head saying that he could never be friends with a freak like her and that he only liked her because he adores strange animals, this began to get to Kaede and she began to break down crying, she then began to see him there with her orphanage bullies killing her puppy, breaking down further 'Lucy' talking in her head began saying that she couldn't coexist with humans. The voice proposed to Kaede to join her and she would make a place for them to live. Consumed by fear and despair, Kaede accepted her other self's offer, sealing her fate by performing a proverbial "deal with the devil".
In a rage she let Lucy loose and killed several people at the festival. Kanae (Kouta's little sister) had the extroadinary gift to see Kaede's vector arms and witnessed the killing, she then ran and told her family that a little girl with horns was kiling everybody, Kouta refused to believe the story. The next day Kaede followed the family to the train station to wish Kouta goodbye, Kanae however kept on telling them that it was her killing everyone so she snuck onto the train and witnessed Kouta telling Kanae to shut up and slapping her, Kaede then ripped Kanae in half and beheaded Kouta's father. In grief and rage, Kouta began assaulting her, telling her to stop killing. Kaede realized that, far from making Kouta love only her, she had done something unforgivable and perhaps pushed him away forever. While she ran away, she privately vowed to live for no other reason than to one day return and apologize to Kouta.

Kaede then decided to lay low for five years, only moving around during the night. The majority of her victims suffering heart attacks as her vectors damaged their blood vessels. The people who had experimented on her mother and brother during her childhood then came across a picture of her that the orphanage posted saying that she was missing and presumed kidnapped, following clues from the murders and the image they received from the photograph they found Kaede and kidnapped her, taking her to the labs to experiment. The scientist Kurama explained to her that humans only wanted to co-exist with Diclonii, thuis angered her as she had seen no signs of humans wanting to co-exist and promised that if she ever escaped she would kill everybody close to him.
Kaede remained in captivity for the next three years securely encased in a metal cage within a containment chamber. The only words she spoke during her time in captivity were the repetition of her vow to Kurama, killing anyone who came too close to her chamber.
During a routine transfer of her chamber from one section of the labs to another one of the guards dropped something and came within her striking range, she used her vectors to cut off his arm, resulting in her retrieving the keys to her chamber. Now free, she made her way out of the facility killing dozens of guards on her way out. She prepared to jump off a cliff in her final bid for safety, as she approached the edge however a guard shot a 50 caliber rifle at the back of her head, the bullet however only managed to shatter her restraining helmet instead and knocked her unconscious and into the sea.
'Nyu' and present day
After falling into the sea, Kaede washed up on shore of the place where it all started and the home of Kouta, whom by sheer coincidence ends up as the one who eventually finds her washed up on the beach. Unable to remember her and the killings Kouta and his new partner Yuka stop to see if she is ok. Kaede however has lost her memories and has developed a childlike and ignorant personality whom is only able to make the sound 'Nyu' it is because of this that Kouta and Yuka decide to name her that and take her into their home. At first Nyu knew little of hygiene and other forms of restraint. Every now and then however her Lucy persona began to re-emerge, it was this state that allowed her to realise that she was in fact living with her childhood love, Kouta. To begin with she decided she would try to stay away from Kouta but always ended up returning because of her dominant 'Nyu' personality. She holds tremendous guilt over killing his family, but when she realizes the existence of her other personality and about Kouta's lost memory, she decides she wants to live in peace as Nyu with Kouta and Yuka. The Nyu and Lucy sides of her psyche manage to keep her inner voice from ever harming Kouta and also Yuka, whose loss she knew Kouta would never forgive.
Kurama eventually found Kaede though, and sent a squad to capture her, Lucy came through and killed the entire force, this battle however was enough for Kouta to regain he's memories of her as a child and of her killing he's family. After a long heartfelt conversation Kouta manages to forgive Lucy though and she remains residing in the house with Kouta and Yuka to this day.
