Sorry if it's a long read 
Orochimaru claimed he was after Sasuke's body to get the Sharingan and master all the jutsu in the world, then we found out him and Kabuto hypothesized the Rinnegan is an evolution from the sharingan. Which leads most to believe that, Orochimaru was going to try and unlock the Rinnegan through Sasuke's body if he hypothesized it's the Sharingan evolution.
Then Orochimaru gets absorbed into Sasuke blah blah, Kabuto carries on Orochimaru's plan. He tells Tobi he wants Sasuke and a Zetsu after the war is over. Uchiha DNA + Senju DNA. Kabuto has the body to attain DSM which Orochimaru did not. Kabuto fights the Uchiha bros. and says "I am currently the closest one to the sage of six paths power" and which he was technically right, he was the CLOSEST one to reaching it, he was close to winning the war, capturing Sasuke, getting a zetsu, and had DSM which I strongly believe Sage Mode and the great frog and snake sage are relevant to the sage and his existence.
Now Orochimaru is back in the game, has a zetsu body, a body about 99% composed of Hashirama's cells, has his full power back, and I think the next phase of what is going to happen can go two ways.
-He will merge with Sasuke because Orochimaru knows he does not stand a chance against Madara, Tobi, or the Juubi giving him his new Senju powers, and the power of the white snake once again. And Orochimaru claims he plans to take over him one day when he gets the chance (Like he did with Itachi, he waited for the time to strike when Sasuke's chakra wasn't enough to suppress him)
-He will help with the alliance, and when it is all over he will take over Tobi's Lab and retrieve the sharingan and use it in his new Senju body, Perfect DSM with this new perfect body and eyes, and will have fully attained the power of the Sage and be the true final villain and attack the leaf (which will make a good movie or new arc) OR he will not help the alliance and just skip to going to Tobi's lab.
Side Note: I seriously doubt Kishimoto is going to kill off Obito, Madara, AND Orochimaru all in one arc or battle, but I am calling it right now even though it is kinda irrelevant to this thread...but Juugo is going to die, protecting Sasuke on the battlefield.
Main Point: Orochimaru and then later Kabuto, were trying to have the perfect bodies to attain the power of the Sage of Six Paths. And that would be the true key to "Discovering the Mysteries of Nature"
