However, I'd say that explosions not having shockwaves and spreading like relatively slow fireballs is a factual error. Also, I'm pretty sure it would be physically impossible for Onoki to slow down the meteors even if he made them lighter due to little something called momentum.

Conservation of momentum would imply that as Onoki decreases the meteor's mass, its velocity would increase to compensate the decrease in mass but for some reason its velocity slowed down. I guess Onoki transferred upward momentum to compensate for the meteor's downward momentum.

Let me give you a hint from future :
