WARNING for anyone who does not like large walls of text. Im about to attempt to justify Madara and Obito's reasoning as many people have complained now.

Madara's Motive:
Madara lived through probably the most war torn era of the shinobi world. Back then power was everything, if you didn't have power then you were sure to be exterminated.

Bodies lied everywhere as this battle for power corrupted everyone and their souls, especially the Uchiha. The Uchiha vs Senju conflict was so bloody that battles spilled for many days without a single stop.

This had all erupted from the conflict between the younger son and the elder son from a decision from the great sage himself that set the ninja world's fate for the rest of its span.

As the battles kept on progressing, Madara and izuna saw that the Senju were starting to gain the upper hand, and like I stated in one point before, if you did not have power in that era, you were sure to be killed. Madara saw that the clan was beginning to fall and Izuna saw too. So what did Izuna do to keep the uchiha on top?

He gave Madara his eyes to give him the EMS and sacrificed his life dying a noble death.

Madara with his new power was going to lead to Uchiha to victory and was going to seal the Uchiha's position and domination. But what do the Uchiha do?

They make a peace treaty with the Senju. That is pretty much a giant slap to the face for Madara, had they completely forgotten that these were the same people that killed many of their clan members? And to top it all of they voted with Konoha for hashirama to become hokage instead of him. Izuna's and many other of the uchiha's sacrifices were rendered useless and Madara hated Konoha and Uchiha for it, and believed the ninja world was a endless hell of war.

Obito's Motives:
Obito was pretty much the Naruto of the Uchiha clan. He hated the ideal of a shinobi that justified that a shinobi should kill and abandon his comrades when all hope seems lost. By the looks of it he may have been an orphan, as he has not mentioned them throughout the flashbacks we have seen of him. Think about it, why would he be late all the time?

This could be why Obito developed such a bond with Rin. Rin (and possibly Minato) could have been the only person that acknowledged Obito as knowing the Uchiha they probably would have rejected him for his many failures.

Kakashi chastised him most of the time for his reckless failures which could have demotivated him even more. Obito had pretty much the exact same personality as Naruto did meaning that Obito might have possessed darkness inside of him that hated all the people that thought of him as a failure.

He lived through the third ninja war

A war which was said to be one of the bloodiest in recent times. Knowing Obito's sensitive demeanor he must have hated the war and what it stood for.

Then Obito said those famous words to kakashi: "Those who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash either way, I'd rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!"
Then the tragic battle of kannabi bridge happened where Obito 'lost' his life. He gave his sharingan to kakashi and on his dying wish pleaded with Kakashi to protect Rin. After that Obito woke up in a dark cave wondering if he was dead only to encounter Madara Uchiha. It is unknown how long Obito was in the cave but it must have been a fairly long amount for Obito's hair to grow that big. Madara told him about how he believed that the world was full of hatred and emptiness and of course at first Obito had no interest. He trained for a long period of time so that he could be fully able to protect Rin with Kakashi and with the help of Zetsus managed to find his feet.

Then the day came when Zetsu alerted them of Kakashi and Rin being in danger from the mist nin. Obito immediately rushed to their location to protect the people who were closest to him, and what did he see?

His best friend KILLING his other best friend and love.

He sees the mist ninja surrounding her body and went insane slaughtering all of them when they attempted to get Rin's body. It was at that moment where Obito realised that Madara was right; he was living in hell. His philosophy was broken right before his eyes and the things he loved the most were torn apart. Obito felt the true loneliness and hatred Madara prophesized. So he decided that he would not let anyone else go through the same pain. He was going to create a dream world full of love full of winners and no conflict would be assured. He must think that in his mind he is helping everyone and keeping them from bearing the same hatred he once did.
Is it a bit clearer now?

Everything was clear before. That may be their rationalization but it's still worth as much as donkey pee.

We already knows obito's motives.
It all good speculation for madara but i doubt it.I mean not once has madara even hinted about caring for his lost brother or show any kind of inkling for the uchiha to be reformed. The best example i can give is when he was showing obito how he can form anything he desires within close range to the mazou.Kishi could of added subtle hints by recreating the uchiha in his dream world or bringing back his brother but he didn't.So far all he cares about is domination.

I agree with Obito's motives, but madara's is a little hazy. Unless Kishi shows us flashbacks of Madara, we won't know what goes on in his head. He seems too cocky and selfish to want peace. He seems like a type of person who is power hungry and wants to be a god. That's just how I see him. I could be wrong, but unless kishimoto confirms Madara's motives, we won't know for sure

Wow I actually read the whole thing and I am not gonna lie but this was one of the best thread I've ever read in naruto base
So good job and I really enjoyed reading this, although their reasons r valid in their own mind but they did a lot of unnecessary things too like y did obito unleashed the kyubi on konoha if he didn't do so then the kyubi wouldn't be inside naruto and they would've completed their goal long time ago.

thanks for this thread, people tend to want to assign black and white sides without fully understanding why Obito and Madara want to do what they want to do.
