To simply put When kabuto was forced to release edo tensei by the effects of izanami. There was nobody restraining him. There was nobody. He took control of the jutsu before his body completely fell apart. If he didn't know the hand seals he would probably be dead. Tobirama actually broke hold of edo tensei momentarily before orochimaru used Hashi's cells. To be honest Madara never tried to broke hold or to forcefully make the jutsu his own. So it could be said he would've never been able to break hold of edo tensei but there's no way to prove it or not.

Madara: Used the seals to break the contract and thus became an immortal body.

Hashirama: Ignores the full command of Edo Tensei through sheer power.

Tobirama: Origional could ignore Edo Tensei with will power, however Senju DNA stops him... Though he noticeably fidgets. He still can likely break the contract because it is his jutsu.

You're right. That's why he used the hand seals as he was being released. Kabuto took over Muu just to talk with Madara because who wouldn't wanna talk to Madara lol. It's like with Dan. He was able to go and rescue Tsunade as he was being released. He had free will to use his powers because Kabuto had released the jutsu.
